Al-Bayhaqī said:
Abu’l-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn Abī ʿAlī al-Saqqāʾ (the water-carrier) narrated to us; Abu’l-ʿAbbās Muḥammad ibn Yaʿqūb narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn ʿUbayd Allāh al-Munādī narrated to us; Yūnus ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; al-Muʿtamir ibn Sulaymān narrated to us, from his father, from Yaḥyā ibn Yaʿmar, from Ibn ʿUmar, from ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb (may Allah be pleased with him) in the ḥadīth of faith. He said:
‘O Muḥammad, what is faith?’
He replied:
‘Faith is that you believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, His Messengers; that you believe in Paradise and Hell, the Scale, the resurrection after death, and that you believe in destiny, its good and its evil.’
He asked, ‘If I do this, am I a believer?’
He said, ‘Yes.’
He answered, ‘You have spoken the truth.’
Shuʿbah reported from al-Aʿmash, from Shamir ibn ʿAṭiyyah, from Abū al-Aḥwaṣ, from ʿAbd Allāh—meaning Ibn Masʿūd—who said: ‘At the Scale people will dispute and press against one another.’
Ibn Abī al-Dunyā said: Abū Naṣr al-Tammār narrated to us; Ḥammād ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Thābit al-Bunānī, from Abū ʿUthmān al-Nahdī, from Salmān al-Fārisī, who said:
‘The Scale will be set up with two pans; were the heavens and the earth and all they contain placed in one of them, it would accommodate them. The angels will say, “Our Lord, who will be weighed with this?” He, Exalted is He, will say, “Whomever I will among My creation.” They will say, “Our Lord, we have not worshipped You as You truly deserve to be worshipped.”’
Ibn Abī al-Dunyā said: Yūsuf ibn Mūsā narrated to us; Muslim ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us; Ḥammād ibn Zayd narrated to us; Abū Ḥanīfah narrated to us [from Ḥammād], from Ibrāhīm, regarding the verse,
“We shall set up the scales of justice for the Day of Resurrection” (Quran 21:47).
He said: ‘A man’s deeds will be brought and placed in one pan of his Scale; then something like a cloud, or like masses of clouds in abundance, will be brought and placed in the other pan, and it will tip the balance. It will be said, “Do you know what this is?” It will be said, “This is the knowledge you learned and taught to the people; they learned it and acted upon it after you.”’
Ibn Abī al-Dunyā said: Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; ʿAlī ibn Isḥāq narrated to us; Ibn al-Mubārak narrated to us, from Abū Bakr al-Hudhalī, who said: Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, relating this from Ibn Masʿūd, said:
‘People will be called to account on the Day of Resurrection. Whoever’s good deeds outnumber his bad deeds by a single deed will enter Paradise, and whoever’s bad deeds outnumber his good deeds by a single deed will enter Hell.’
He then recited,
“So those whose scales are heavy—it is they who are the successful (102); and those whose scales are light—it is they who have ruined themselves” (Quran 23:102-103),
and added, ‘Indeed, the Scale becomes light or heavy by the weight of a single mustard seed.’ (1)
Ibn Abī al-Dunyā said: Hārūn ibn Sufyān [narrated to us]; al-Sahmī narrated to us; ʿAbbād ibn Shaybah (2), from Saʿīd ibn Anas, from al-Ḥasan, who said:
‘On the Day of Resurrection Allah will offer Adam three apologies. He will say: “O Adam, had I not cursed the liars and detested falsehood and betrayal, I would have shown mercy today to your offspring in spite of the severity of what I have prepared for them of …”’
