Al-Bayhaqī relates:
Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn ʿAlī al-Muqriʾ narrated to us; al-Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq informed us; Yūsuf ibn Yaʿqūb al-Qāḍī narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Minhāl narrated to us; Yazīd ibn Zurayʿ narrated to us; Yūnus ibn ʿUbayd narrated to us, from al-Ḥasan, that ʿĀʾishah once mentioned the Fire and began to weep.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked her, “What makes you weep, O ʿĀʾishah?”
She replied, “I remembered the Fire and so I cried. Will you remember your family on the Day of Resurrection?”
He said,
“There are three stations at which no one will recall anyone else:
- When deeds are placed upon the Scale, until it is known whether a person’s balance will be heavy or light;
- When it is proclaimed, ‘Come, read my record!’ (al-Ḥāqqah 69:19) as the scrolls fly about, until he knows whether his record will fall into his right hand, his left, or behind his back;
- And when the ṣirāṭ is laid across the bridge over Hell.”
Yūnus added: I am uncertain whether al-Ḥasan also said, “Its sides are hooks and barbed thorns with which Allah detains whomsoever He wills of His creation until it is known whether he will be saved or not.”
Al-Bayhaqī continued:
Al-Rūdhbarī narrated to us; Ibn Dāsah narrated to us; Abū Dāwūd narrated to us; Yaʿqūb ibn Ibrāhīm and Ḥumayd ibn Masʿadah both reported that Ismāʿīl ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to them, saying:
Yūnus narrated to us, from al-Ḥasan, from ʿĀʾishah, that she mentioned the Fire and wept … and he reported the ḥadīth in a similar manner, except that he said:
“ … and at the Book, when it is declared, ‘Come, read my record!’ until he knows where his scroll will land—whether in his right hand, his left, or behind his back; and at the ṣirāṭ, when it is placed in the very midst of Hell.” Yaʿqūb quoted from Yūnus: this is the exact wording of his report. (1)
[Another chain from ʿĀʾishah]
Imām Aḥmad said: Yaḥyā ibn Isḥāq narrated to us; Ibn Luhayʿah informed us, from Khālid ibn Abī ʿImrān, from al-Qāsim ibn Muḥammad, from ʿĀʾishah, who said:
I asked, “O Messenger of Allah, will a beloved remember his beloved on the Day of Resurrection?”
He replied,
“O ʿĀʾishah, at three moments—no.
At the Scale, until it is seen whether it becomes heavy or light—no.
At the dispersal of the books, when a person is either given his in his right hand or in his left—no.
Then, when a neck emerges from the Fire, coils around them and rages at them, saying, ‘I have been appointed over three: over anyone who ascribed a deity to Allah; over anyone who disbelieved in the Day of Reckoning; and over every arrogant tyrant.’
It will wrap around them and hurl them into the depths.
Over Hell there is a bridge finer than a hair and sharper than a sword; upon it are hooks and barbs that seize whomsoever Allah wills. People will cross it like the blink of an eye, like lightning, like the wind, like the best horses and camels. The angels will be saying, ‘Lord, grant safety, Lord, grant safety!’ Some will pass unharmed, some will be grazed yet delivered, and some will be tumbled headlong into the Fire.” (2)
Earlier, through the transmission of Ḥarb ibn Maymūn from al-Naḍr ibn Anas, from Anas, it was related that he said, “Intercede for me, O Messenger of Allah.”
He replied, “I shall do so.”
He asked, “Where shall I look for you?”
He answered, “Seek me first at the ṣirāṭ.”
