He said:
“Concerning the words of the Exalted, ‘We shall set up the just scales for the Day of Resurrection’ [21:47], it is possible that there will be several actual scales in which the deeds are weighed; it is also possible that what is meant is the things weighed themselves, and that the plural is used because of the variety of deeds to be weighed—and Allah knows best.
Clarification that the Scale possesses two tangible, visible pans
Imam Ahmad related:
Ibrāhīm ibn Isḥāq al-Ṭāliqānī narrated to us; Ibn al-Mubārak narrated to us, from Layth ibn Saʿd, who said:
ʿĀmir ibn Yaḥyā related to me, from Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ḥubulī—whose name is ʿAbd Allāh ibn Yazīd—who said: I heard ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr relate that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Indeed Allah, Blessed and Exalted, will single out a man from my community before all creatures on the Day of Resurrection. He will spread out for him ninety-nine scrolls; each scroll reaches as far as the eye can see. Then He will say to him, ‘Do you deny any of this? Have My recording angels wronged you?’ He will reply, ‘No, my Lord.’ He will say, ‘Have you any excuse, or any good deed?’ The man will be struck speechless and answer, ‘No, my Lord.’ He will say, ‘Yes indeed—you have one good deed in Our sight, and you will not be wronged today.’ Or He will say, ‘There is no injustice against you today.’ A card will then be brought forth on which is written: ‘I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger.’ He will say, ‘Bring it here.’ The man will exclaim, ‘My Lord, what is this card compared with these scrolls?’ He will reply, ‘You will not be wronged.’”
He (the narrator) said: “The scrolls will be placed in one pan of the scale and the card in the other. The scrolls will fly up while the card grows heavy, for nothing is heavier along with the Name of Allah, the All-Merciful, the Ever-Compassionate.”
Al-Tirmidhī, Ibn Mājah, and Ibn Abī al-Dunyā also transmitted this narration from Layth. Al-Tirmidhī added: and Ibn Luhayʿah, both of them, from ʿĀmir ibn Yaḥyā. Al-Tirmidhī said: ‘It is ḥasan gharīb.’ (1)

Ahmad said:
Qutaybah narrated to us; Ibn Luhayʿah narrated to us, from ʿAmr ibn Yaḥyā (2), from Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ḥubulī, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The scales will be set up on the Day of Resurrection. A man will be brought forward and placed in one pan, and everything that has been recorded of his deeds will be placed in the other, so that the scale tilts against him.” He said:
