—words that could profit them, nor a look of mercy. Indeed, on that Day they will be screened from their Lord, for the Most High says:
“On the Day We gather them (1) all together, [We shall say]: ‘Company of jinn, you have taken many from humankind.’ Their human allies will say, ‘Our Lord, we benefited one from another, and we have now reached the term You appointed for us.’ He will say, ‘The Fire is your dwelling, to remain therein, except as Allah wills. Surely your Lord is All-Wise, All-Knowing.’” [al-Anʿām 6:128]
And He, exalted be He, also says:
“This is the Day of Decision: We have gathered you and the former peoples (38). If you have any scheme, then scheme against Me (39). Woe that Day to those who deny.” [al-Mursalat 77:38–40]
He likewise says:
“On the Day Allah resurrects them all, they will swear to Him as they now swear to you, thinking they are on something. Truly, they are the liars.” [al-Mujadilah 58:18]
And He says:
“Those against whom the Word is due will say: ‘Our Lord, these are the ones we led astray; we led them astray just as we ourselves were astray. We now declare before You our disavowal: they never worshipped us.’ (63) And it will be said, ‘Call upon your partners.’ They will call them, but they will not answer, and they will see the punishment—if only they had followed guidance! (64) And on that Day He will call to them and say, ‘What answer did you give to the messengers?’ (65) Then every argument will be silenced and they will not question one another.” [al-Qasas 28:63–66]
He further says:
“On the Day He will call to them and say, ‘Where are My associates that you used to claim?’ (74) And We shall bring forth from every nation a witness and shall say, ‘Produce your proof.’ They will then know that truth belongs to Allah alone, and all that they invented will forsake them.” [al-Qasas 28:74–75]
Verses on this subject are exceedingly numerous.
It is established in the two Ṣaḥīḥs [as will be mentioned later] from the narration of [Khaythamah, from] ʿAdiyy ibn Ḥātim that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
(2) “There is none among you but that his Lord will speak to him, with no interpreter between them.”
He will meet a man and say, “Did I not honour you, marry you off, place horses and camels at your service, and allow you to lead and prosper?” The man will answer, “Indeed.” He will ask, “Did you think you would ever meet Me?” He will reply, “No.” He will say, “Today I shall forget you just as you forgot Me.” (3)
This is a clear, explicit affirmation that Allah Most High will speak and address His unbelieving servant.
As for the sinful believers, the hadith of Ibn ʿUmar—recorded in the two Ṣaḥīḥs and known as the ḥadīth of the private conversation, to be cited presently—relates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Allah will bring His servant close to Him on the Day of Resurrection until He screens him, then He will make him acknowledge his sins, saying, ‘You committed such-and-such on such-and-such a day, and such-and-such on such-and-such a day.’ He will reply, ‘Yes, my Lord,’ until he fears that he is doomed. Then Allah the Exalted will say: ‘I concealed them for you in worldly life, and today I forgive you for them.’” (4)

Allah (Glorified and Exalted) says:
“And Paradise will be brought near to the God-fearing (90) while Hell is exposed to the deviant.” [al-Shuʿarāʾ 26:90–91]
And He says:
