It is further authenticated in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, in the narration transmitted by al-Zuhrī through Abū Salamah and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Aʿraj, from Abū Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said:
“On the Day of Resurrection people will be struck unconscious, and I shall be the first to regain consciousness. I will then find Moses holding fast to one of the legs of the Throne. I do not know whether he, too, was struck unconscious and recovered before me, or whether he was spared because of the swoon that befell him at (Mount) Ṭūr.” (1)
His statement, “or was he spared because of the swoon at Ṭūr,” shows that the swoon which will overtake mankind on the Day of Resurrection is caused by the Lord—exalted is He—manifesting Himself to His servants in order to settle judgment. People will faint at this disclosure of Majesty and Splendour, just as Moses fainted on the day at Mount Ṭūr when he asked to see Allah:
“When his Lord manifested Himself to the mountain, He made it crumble, and Moses fell unconscious.” [al-Aʿrāf 7:143]
Thus, when mankind swoons on the Day of Resurrection, Moses will either have already been compensated by the swoon at Ṭūr and will therefore not swoon that day, or he will swoon but regain consciousness first—that is, with a lighter swoon—Allah knows best.
Some aḥādīth also state that the believers will behold Allah on the plains of the Resurrection. It is soundly reported in both Ṣaḥīḥs—this wording is al-Bukhārī’s—through the chain of Qays ibn Abī Ḥāzim from Jarīr ibn ʿAbd Allāh, who said: The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—came out to us on the night of the full moon and said:
“You will certainly see your Lord on the Day of Resurrection just as you see this moon; you will have no difficulty in seeing Him.”
Al-Bukhārī also records the wording:
“You will surely behold your Lord directly.” (2)
It is likewise reported that they will prostrate to Him, exalted is He. Ibn Mājah relates: Jabbārah ibn al-Mughallis al-Ḥimmānī told us, ʿAbd al-Aʿlā ibn Abī al-Musāwir told us, from Abū Burdah, from Abū Mūsā, who said that the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—said:
“When Allah gathers the creation on the Day of Resurrection, permission will be given to the community of Muhammad—peace and blessings be upon him—to prostrate. They will prostrate for a long time, then it will be said, ‘Raise your heads; We have made your numbers a ransom for you from the Fire.’” This report has supporting chains from other routes, as will be mentioned. (3)
Al-Bazzār narrated: Muḥammad ibn al-Muthannā reported to us, Yaḥyā ibn Ḥammād reported to us, Abū ʿAwānah reported to us, from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—who said:
“Indeed one of them will glance back and the shin will be uncovered, whereupon they will fall in prostration, while the spines of the hypocrites will recoil until they become like one rigid bone, resembling the horns of cattle.”
He (al-Bazzār) then remarked: We know of no one who narrated this from al-Aʿmash except Abū ʿAwānah.
I say: another supporting chain will be cited later.
It is also mentioned in the ḥadith of the Trumpet: “Allah will call out to the servants on the Day of Resurrection, saying: ‘I have been listening to you since I created you until this very Day of yours, observing your deeds and hearing your words. Now give Me your full attention, for what follows concerns nothing but your deeds…’"
