and the nations, all on their knees, arrayed in ranks, whereupon a herald will call out:
“Today you will learn who are the people of true honor. Let those who praised Allah in every circumstance stand!” They will rise and will be escorted to Paradise.
Then he will call a second time:
“Today you will learn who are the people of honor. Let those stand whose
﴿Their sides forsake their beds; they supplicate their Lord in fear and hope, and out of what We have provided them they spend (16)﴾
[al-Sajdah: 16].”
They will rise and will be escorted to Paradise.
Then he will call a third time:
“Today you will learn who are the people of honor. Let those stand of whom it was said,
﴿Men whom neither trade nor sale distract from the remembrance of Allah, the establishment of prayer, and the giving of zakāh; they fear a Day on which hearts and eyes will be overturned﴾
[al-Nūr: 37].”
They will rise and will be escorted to Paradise.
When no one from these three groups remains, a neck of the Fire will burst forth and loom over the creation. It will have two discerning eyes and an eloquent tongue, and it will say:
“I have been charged with three categories of people. I have been charged with every obstinate tyrant.” It will pick them out of the ranks the way a bird picks up a sesame seed and will withdraw with them into Hell. Then it will come out a second time and say:
“I have been charged with those who harmed Allah and His Messenger.” It will pick them from the rows like a bird snatching sesame seeds and will shrink back with them into Hell. Then it will come out a third time and say:
“I have been charged with the makers of images.” It will pluck them from the ranks as a bird picks sesame seeds and will shrink back with them into Hell.
He said: When it has taken three from this group and three from that, the records will be spread open, the scales set up, and all creatures summoned for the reckoning (1).
Allah, the Exalted, says:
“Indeed not! When the earth is pounded to powder—utterly pounded— (21)
and your Lord comes, and the angels, rank upon rank, (22)
and Hell on that Day is brought near—on that Day man will remember, but how will remembrance avail him? (23)”
[al-Fajr: 21-23].
He also says:
“Are they waiting for anything but that Allah should come to them in canopies of clouds, together with the angels, and the matter be decided? To Allah all matters are returned.”
[al-Baqarah: 210].
And He says:
“The earth will shine with the light of its Lord; the Record will be laid open; the prophets and the witnesses will be brought forward, and judgment will be pronounced between them in truth, and they will not be wronged. (69) Every soul will be paid in full for what it has done, and He is best aware of what they do. (70)”
[al-Zumar: 69-70].
And He says:
“On the Day when the sky is rent asunder with clouds and the angels are sent down in a majestic descent (25), true sovereignty that Day belongs to the All-Merciful, and it will be a Day hard for the disbelievers. (26)”
[al-Furqān: 25-26].
In the ḥadith of the Trumpet it is stated that Allah will place His kursī (chair) wherever He wills upon His earth, meaning the chair of decisive judgment. This is not the kursī mentioned in the Verse of the Kursī, nor the one referred to in Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Ḥibbān:
“The seven heavens, the seven earths, and all that is in them and between them, compared with the kursī, are but like a ring thrown upon a vast desert plain; and the kursī, compared with the Throne (ʿarsh), is like that ring compared with that plain. None but Allah—exalted is He—knows the magnitude of the Throne.” (2)
This kursī may also be called the Throne, for such wording occurs in certain traditions, as in the two Ṣaḥīḥs on the authority of Abū Hurayrah: “Seven are they whom Allah will shade in His shade”—and in another wording (3): “in the shade of His Throne—on a day when there is no shade but His …” the ḥadith in full (4).
