Section: The Coming of the Lord—glorified and exalted is He—as He wills on the Day of Resurrection to issue His final judgment among His creatures.
The previously cited ḥadith of al-ṣūr (the Trumpet) states that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ proceeds and intercedes with Allah so that judgment may be pronounced among the servants, the Lord, majestic and exalted, will say, “I shall come to you and judge between you.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ will then return and stand with the people in his original station. At that moment the heavens will split apart amid clouds of light, and the angels will descend in ranks. First the inhabitants of the lowest heaven will come down—equal in number to all the jinn and humankind on earth—and they will encircle the people in a vast ring. Next the second heaven will be rent open; its angels, equal to the jinn and humankind together with the angels of the lowest heaven, will likewise surround those below them in another ring. The same will occur with the angels of the third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh heavens, each host surrounding the previous one. Then the cherubic angels (al-malāʾikatu l-karūbiyyūn), the Bearers of the Throne and those nearest to Him will descend, their voices resounding with glorification, sanctification and magnification, saying:
Subḥāna dhī l-ʿizzati wa-l-jabarūt (Glory be to the Possessor of might and overpowering dominion);
Subḥāna dhī l-mulki wa-l-malakūt (Glory be to the Possessor of sovereignty and the unseen realm);
Subḥāna l-ḥayy alladhī lā yamūt (Glory be to the Ever-Living who never dies);
Subḥāna alladhī yumītu l-khalāʾiqa wa-lā yamūt (Glory be to the One who causes the creatures to die yet never dies).
Then Allah will come to them to render judgment.
Abū Bakr Ibn Abī al-Dunyā said in his book al-Ahwāl: “Ḥamzah ibn al-ʿAbbās narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUthmān narrated to us; Ibn al-Mubārak narrated to us; ʿAwf narrated to us, from Abū l-Minhāl Sayyār ibn Salāmah al-Riyāḥī; Shahr ibn Ḥawshab narrated to us; he said: Ibn ʿAbbās narrated to me:
He said: ‘On the Day of Resurrection the earth will be stretched out like a tanned hide, its span increased by such-and-such, and all creatures—jinn and men—will be gathered on a single plain. When that happens, this lowest heaven will be rent open (1) and its inhabitants will be poured out upon the face of the earth. The angels of this lowest heaven alone will outnumber all the inhabitants of the earth, jinn and humans, twofold. When the people of the earth behold them they will be seized with terror and will hasten toward them, saying, “Is our Lord among you?” The angels will recoil from the question and reply, “Subḥāna rabbinā, [He is not among us]; He is coming.”
[Then the second heaven will be rent asunder; its angels are more numerous than the angels of the lowest heaven and more than all the inhabitants of the earth twofold. When they are poured out upon the face of the earth, the people will hasten toward them in alarm and ask, “Is our Lord among you?” The angels will shrink back from the question and answer, “Subḥāna rabbinā [He is not among us]; He is coming.” The heavens will be opened one after another, each time a heaven is opened its angels being more numerous than all the angels beneath it and more than all the inhabitants of the earth—jinn and men—twofold. Each time they are poured forth upon the face of the earth, the people will ask as before, and the angels will answer as before,] until the seventh heaven is opened; its angels alone outnumber the angels of the six heavens combined and the inhabitants of the earth—jinn and men—twofold. And Allah will come among them.’"
