Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

your Pool?’
He answered:

“It stretches as far as the distance between Aden and ʿAmmān—indeed, it is broader, far broader,”
he said, motioning with his hand,
“and it has two channels (1), one of gold and one of silver.”

Yazīd then asked, “And what is the water of your Pool?”
He replied:

“It is whiter than milk, sweeter than honey, and more fragrant than musk. Whoever drinks from it will never again feel thirst, and his face will never darken.” (2)

Another route for this report
Ibn Abī al-Dunyā said: “Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf ibn al-Ṣabbāḥ narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Wahb narrated to us; from Muʿāwiyah ibn Ṣāliḥ; from Abū Yaḥyā; from Abū Umāmah al-Bāhilī, who said: People asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, how wide is your Pool?’ He replied:

‘The distance between Aden and ʿAmmān,’
—he gestured with his hand—
‘in fact, it is even vaster, still vaster. In it are two channels, one of gold and the other of silver.’

They asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, what is its drink?’ He replied:

‘Whiter than milk, sweeter to the taste than honey, and more fragrant than musk. Whoever drinks a single draught from it will never be thirsty again, nor will his face ever turn dark.’ (3)

Narration of Abū Barzah al-Aslamī (may Allah be pleased with him)
Abū Dāwūd said: “Muslim ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Salām ibn Abī Ḥāzim—Abū Ṭālūt—narrated to us. He said: I was present when Abū Barzah al-Aslamī entered upon ʿUbayd Allāh ibn Ziyād. So-and-so—Muslim named him—who was sitting in the ceremonial row, related the incident to me. When ʿUbayd Allāh saw Abū Barzah he said, ‘This companion of yours is certainly a stocky fellow (4).’ The elder understood the remark and replied, ‘I never thought I would live among a people who reproach me for the companionship of Muhammad ﷺ.’

ʿUbayd Allāh said to him, ‘Your companionship with Muhammad is an honor, not a disgrace. I summoned you only to ask about the Pool. Did you hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say anything about it?’

Abū Barzah answered, ‘Yes—more than once, twice, three times, four times, even five times:

“Whoever denies it, may Allah not allow him to drink from it.”’

With that he left, angered.

Ibn Abī al-Dunyā also said: “Abū Khaythamah narrated to us; Yazīd ibn Hārūn narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Mihzam (5) al-ʿAbdī narrated to us, from Abū Ṭālūt al-ʿAbdī, who said: I heard Abū Barzah say [I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say] concerning the Pool:

‘Whoever denies it—may Allah not give him to drink from it.’”
