put forth leaves or bear fruit.”
The Anṣārī then asked, “O Messenger of Allah, does it have fruit?”
He replied:
“Yes—it carries jewels of every color. Its water is whiter than milk and sweeter than honey. Whoever drinks a single draught from it will never thirst again, and whoever is denied it will never thereafter feel quenched.” (1)
This report is related only by Aḥmad and is exceedingly rare.
Narration of ʿUtbah ibn ʿAbd al-Sulamī (may Allah be pleased with him)
Al-Ṭabarānī said: Aḥmad ibn Khulayd al-Ḥalabī narrated to us; Abū Tawbah al-Rabīʿ ibn Nāfiʿ narrated to us; Muʿāwiyah ibn Sallām narrated to us, from Zayd ibn Sallām, who said that he heard Abū Sallām say: ʿĀmir ibn Zayd al-Bakkālī told me that he heard ʿUtbah ibn ʿAbd al-Sulamī say:
A Bedouin came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, “What is this Pool of yours that you speak about?”
He answered:
“It stretches from al-Bayḍāʾ (2) to Busra. Allah will feed it by a canal whose two ends no human being among those whom Allah has created knows.” (3)
Abū ʿAbd Allah al-Qurṭubī said: Al-Ḥakīm al-Tirmidhī recorded in Nawādir al-Uṣūl, through the narration of ʿUthmān ibn Maʿẓūn, that the Prophet ﷺ said:
“O ʿUthmān, do not turn away from my sunnah; for whoever shuns my sunnah and then dies before repenting, the angels will strike his face away from my Pool on the Day of Resurrection.” (4)
Narration of ʿUqbah ibn ʿĀmir al-Juhanī (may Allah be pleased with him)
Al-Bukhārī said: ʿAmr ibn Khālid narrated to us; al-Layth narrated to us, from Yazīd, from Abū al-Khair, from ʿUqbah ibn ʿĀmir:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out one day, performed the funeral prayer for the people of Uḥud as one prays over the deceased, then returned and sat on the pulpit and said:
“I will precede you to the Pool, and I will be a witness over you. By Allah, I am looking at my Pool right now. I have been given the keys to the treasures of the earth—or the keys of the earth. By Allah, I do not fear that you will commit shirk after I am gone, but I fear that you will compete over it.”
Muslim also transmitted it—from Qutaybah, from al-Layth, and from Yaḥyā ibn Ayyūb, from Yazīd ibn Abī Ḥabīb—with the wording:
“I will precede you to the Pool, and its breadth is like the distance between Aylah and al-Juhfah. I do not fear that you will associate partners with Allah after me, but I fear for you concerning this world: that you will vie with one another over it, fight one another, and so perish,”
