Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

Muḥammad ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us; Shuʿbah narrated to us, from al-Mughīrah, who said:
I heard Abū Wāʾil relate from ʿAbd Allah, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said:

“I will precede you to the Pool. Men from among you will surely be presented before me, then they will be dragged away from me. I will say, ‘My Lord, they are my Companions,’ but it will be said to me, ‘You do not know what they introduced after you.’”

This was likewise transmitted by ʿĀṣim from Abū Wāʾil, and Ḥuṣayn reported it from Abū Wāʾil, from Ḥudhayfah, from the Prophet ﷺ. (1)

[Another chain concerning the Pool and other matters]
Imām Aḥmad said: ʿĀrim ibn al-Faḍl narrated to us; Saʿīd ibn Zayd (2) narrated to us; ʿAlī ibn al-Ḥakam al-Bunānī narrated to us, from ʿUthmān, from Ibrāhīm, from ʿAlqamah and al-Aswad, from Ibn Masʿūd, who said:

The two sons of Mulaykah came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, “Our mother has died. She used to honour her husband and show kindness to her children”—he added, “and to the guest”—“but in the Days of Ignorance she buried a daughter alive.” He replied:

“Your mother is in the Fire.”

They turned away with distress visible on their faces. He ordered that they be brought back; they returned with happiness showing on their faces, hoping that something new had been revealed. He said:

“My mother is with your mother.”

A man from the hypocrites said, “What benefit will that bring his mother, while we walk right behind him?” Then a man from the Anṣār— and I never saw anyone ask more questions—said, “O Messenger of Allah, has your Lord given you a promise regarding her—or regarding both of them?” He assumed it concerned something he had already heard, so he replied:

“Whatever my Lord wills (3), and whatever sustenance He grants me therein. Indeed, I shall stand at the Praiseworthy Station on the Day of Resurrection.”

The Anṣārī asked, “What is that Praiseworthy Station?”

He said:

“That is when you will be brought barefoot, naked and uncircumcised. The first person to be clothed will be Abraham—may Allah’s mercy be upon them. He will say, ‘Clothe my close friend.’ Two white garments will be brought and he will wear them; then he will sit facing the Throne. My garments will then be brought and I will don them; I will stand at his right in a place no one else will occupy, a position for which the first and the last will envy me. A river will then be opened from al-Kawthar to the Pool.”

The hypocrite said, “No water has ever flowed except that it had ḥāl or raḍrāḍ.”

The Anṣārī asked, “O Messenger of Allah, does it have ḥāl or raḍrāḍ (4)?”

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied:

“Its ḥāl—ḥāl (bed or fine sand) is musk, and its raḍrāḍ—raḍrāḍ (pebbles) is tūm (5).”

The hypocrite said, “I have never heard the like of this today; rarely does water run over ḥāl or raḍrāḍ without vegetation springing up.”

The Anṣārī asked, “O Messenger of Allah, does it have vegetation?”

He said:

“Yes—stalks of gold.”

[The hypocrite] said, “I have never heard the like of this today, for rarely does a stalk…"
