Al-Mukhāriq [ibn Abī al-Mukhāriq] related to me, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar, that he heard the Prophet ﷺ say:
“My Pool is as wide as the distance between Aden and ʿAmman; it is colder than snow, sweeter than honey, and its scent is more fragrant than musk. Its goblets are like the stars in the sky. Whoever drinks from it a single draught will never thirst thereafter. The very first people to reach it will be the ṣaʿālīk al-muhājirīn—the destitute among the Emigrants.”
Someone asked, “Who are they, O Messenger of Allah?” He replied, “Those whose hair is unkempt, whose faces are sallow, and whose clothes are soiled. The doors of palaces are not opened for them, nor do they marry women of luxury. They discharge everything that is due from them, yet they do not insist on what is due to them.” Aḥmad alone narrated this tradition. (1)
Another chain from Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him)
Abū Dāʾūd al-Ṭayālisī said: Abū ʿAwanah narrated to us; ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib narrated to us. ʿAṭāʾ said: Muḥārib ibn Dithār once asked me, “What did Saʿīd ibn Jubayr say about al-kawthar?” I replied, “Saʿīd ibn Jubayr used to relate from Ibn ʿAbbās that it means ‘abundant good.’” Muḥārib responded, “What weight does Ibn ʿAbbās’s opinion carry?” Then he said, “ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar narrated to us that when the verse
‘Indeed, We have granted you al-Kawthar’ (Q 108:1)
was revealed, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ told us:
‘It is a river in Paradise whose banks are of gold, running over pearls and rubies. Its soil is more fragrant than musk, its taste is sweeter than honey, and its water is whiter than snow.’”
Al-Bayhaqī transmitted it through Ḥammād ibn Zayd, on the authority of ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib, with a similar wording. Al-Tirmidhī and Ibn Mājah also recorded it via Muḥammad ibn Faḍl, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib; and al-Tirmidhī graded it ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ. (2)
The narration of ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ (may Allah be pleased with him)
Al-Bukhārī said: Saʿīd ibn Abī Maryam narrated to us; Nāfiʿ ibn ʿUmar narrated to us, from Ibn Abī Mulaykah, who said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“My Pool extends a month’s journey. Its water is whiter than milk, its fragrance more pleasant than musk, and its cups are like the stars in the sky. Whoever drinks from it will never thirst again.”
Muslim also related it, through Dāʾūd ibn ʿAmr, from Nāfiʿ ibn ʿUmar, with the same wording. (3)
Another chain from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ (may Allah be pleased with him)
Imām Aḥmad said: Yaḥyā narrated to us; Ḥusayn al-Muʿallim narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Buraydah narrated to us, from Abū Sabrah,
