—Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī—indeed I heard him, and he would add to the report:
‘I will say, “They are my people.” It will be said, “You do not know what they introduced after you.” I will then say, “Away, away with those who altered after me!”’
Ibn ʿAbbās explained: suhqan means “far away.” It is also said that saḥīq means “distant,” and that saḥaqahu and asḥaqahu both mean “he drove him far away.” This wording is unique to this chain of transmission. (1)
As for the narration of ʿAbd Allah al-Ṣunābihī, which Qāḍī ʿIyāḍ also cited—and likewise the narration of Suwayd ibn Jablah—Qāḍī ʿIyāḍ mentioned that as well.
The transmission of ʿAbd Allah ibn Zayd ibn ʿĀṣim al-Māzinī (may Allah be pleased with him) is recorded in both Ṣaḥīḥ collections. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ distributed the spoils of Ḥunayn, giving shares to certain nobles of Quraysh and other Arab tribes, some of the Anṣār took offence. He addressed them and said, among other things:
‘You will experience favouritism after me, so be patient until you meet me at the Pool.’ (2)
The transmission of ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with him)
Abū Bakr al-Bazzār said: Yūsuf ibn Mūsā narrated to us; Jarīr narrated to us; Layth—meaning Ibn Abī Sulaym—narrated to us, from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from his father, from Ibn ʿAbbās:
I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘I am seizing your waistbands, warning: “Beware of Hellfire! Beware of the ḥudūd (prescribed penalties)! Beware of Hellfire! Beware of the ḥudūd!”—three times. Once I die, I will have left you upon a clear path, and I will be your forerunner at the Pool. Whoever reaches it has succeeded. Then some people will be brought and taken off to the left, and I will say, “My Lord—” (I think he said: “my Companions”). It will be said, “They kept turning back on their heels after you.”’ He added: ‘Layth alone transmits this from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Saʿīd ibn Jubayr.’ (3)
Al-Bukhārī said in the ‘Chapter on the Pool’ of his Ṣaḥīḥ: ʿAmr ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; Hushaym narrated to us; Abū Bishr and ʿAṭāʾ ibn al-Sāʾib narrated to us, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said:
‘Al-Kawthar is the abundant good that Allah granted him.’
Abū Bishr related: I said to Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, ‘Some people claim it is a river in Paradise.’ Saʿīd replied, ‘The river that is in Paradise is part of the abundant good that Allah granted him.’ (4)
I say: It has already been noted that two downspouts—one of gold and one of silver—flow from al-Kawthar in Paradise into the Pool at the place of standing.
