Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

ʿAbd al-Wahhāb, who said: Jaʿfar ibn ʿAwn informed us; Abū Ḥayyān—Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd al-Taymī of the clan of Taym al-Rabāb—narrated to us; Yazīd ibn Ḥayyān al-Taymī narrated to us; he said:

“I was present with Zayd ibn Arqam when ʿUbayd Allah ibn Ziyād sent for him and said, ‘What are these reports that have reached me which you relate from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, claiming that he has a Pool in Paradise?’

Zayd replied, ‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ told us that and promised it to us.’

Ibn Ziyād retorted, ‘You have lied; you are only a senile old man.’

Zayd said, ‘Indeed, these two ears of mine heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I heard him say:

“Whoever deliberately lies about me, let him take his seat in the Fire,”

and I have never lied about the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.’ (1)

His narration will appear later through another of his brothers.

The transmission of Salmān al-Fārisī (may Allah be pleased with him)

Imām Abū Bakr ibn Khuzaymah (may Allah have mercy on him) recorded—through the chain of ʿAlī ibn Zayd ibn Judʿān, from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, from Salmān (may Allah be pleased with him)—that he said:

“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ addressed us on the last day of Shaʿbān and said:

‘O people, a magnificent, blessed month has come to you…’

He then mentioned at length the virtues of the month of Ramadan until he said:

‘Whoever, during it, gives a fasting person enough to eat his fill, Allah will give that benefactor a drink from my Pool after which he will never be thirsty again until he enters Paradise.’ (2)

[The narration of Samurah ibn Jundub al-Fazārī (may Allah be pleased with him)]

Abū Bakr ibn Abī ʿĀṣim said: Ibrāhīm ibn al-Mustamir narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Bakkār ibn Bilāl narrated to us; Saʿīd—namely, Ibn Bashīr—narrated to us, from Qatādah, from al-Ḥasan, from Samurah ibn Jundub, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said:

‘Every prophet has a Pool, and they will boast among themselves as to which of them has the greatest number of visitors, and I hope to have the most visitors.’

Al-Tirmidhī likewise related it from Aḥmad ibn Nayzak, from Muḥammad ibn Bakkār ibn Bilāl, from Saʿīd ibn Bashīr, and said, ‘This is a gharīb (singular) ḥadīth.’ He added: ‘It is also transmitted by Ashʿath ibn ʿAbd al-Malik from al-Ḥasan in mursal form, and that version is sounder.’ (3)

[The narration of Sahl ibn Saʿd al-Sāʿidī (may Allah be pleased with him)]

Al-Bukhārī said: Saʿīd ibn Abī Maryam narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Muṭarrif narrated to us; Abū Ḥāzim narrated to us, from Sahl ibn Saʿd, who said:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

‘I will precede you to the Pool. Whoever passes by me will drink, and whoever drinks will never be thirsty again. Groups of people whom I know and who know me will surely come to me, but then a barrier will be placed between them and me.’

Abū Ḥāzim said: An-Nuʿmān ibn Abī ʿAyyāsh heard me narrate this and said, ‘Did you hear that from Sahl himself?’ I replied, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘I testify that—’

(1) Narrated by Ahmad in his Musnad (vol. 4, p. 367), no. 19266; and by al-Bayhaqi in al-Ba‘th wa al-Nushur, p. 170. It is an authentic (sahih) hadith. (2) Narrated by Ibn Khuzaymah, no. 1887; its chain of transmission (isnad) is weak. (3) Narrated by Ibn Abi ‘Asim in as-Sunnah, no. 734; and by al-Tirmidhi, no. 2443. It is a good (hasan) hadith when supported by its corroborating chains.
