to Mecca. Upon it are pitchers (1) more numerous than the stars; when one believer reaches for a vessel and puts it back, another will already have taken hold of it.”
He then said, “This narration from Jābir is related only through this path.” Ibn Abī al-Dunyā likewise transmitted it from Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Qurashī, from ʿUbaydah ibn al-Aswad, with the same chain (2).
Narration of Jundub ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Bajalī
(may Allah be pleased with him)
al-Bukhārī said: ʿAbdān related to us; my father informed me; from Shuʿbah, from ʿAbd al-Malik, who said: I heard Jundub say, “I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say,
“I am your forerunner at the Pool.”
Muslim also recorded it on the authority of Shuʿbah, Zāʾidah, and Misʿar, all of them from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr, with this wording. Imām Aḥmad transmitted it as well through those narrators and through Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah from him.
Sufyān then explained, “A farat is the one who goes ahead.” (3)
Narration of Ḥārithah ibn Wahb al-Khuzāʿī
(may Allah be pleased with him)
al-Bukhārī said: ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd Allah related to us; Ḥaramī ibn ʿUmārah related to us; Shuʿbah related to us, from Maʿbad ibn Khālid, who heard Ḥārithah ibn Wahb say: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mention the Pool and state,
“As far apart as Madinah and Ṣanʿāʾ.”
Ibn Abī ʿAdī added, on the authority of Shuʿbah, from Maʿbad ibn Khālid, from Ḥārithah ibn Wahb, that he heard the Prophet ﷺ say,
“Its Pool extends from Ṣanʿāʾ to Madinah.”
al-Mustawrid then asked him, “Did you not hear him mention the vessels?”
He replied, “No.”
So al-Mustawrid said, “Yet vessels can be seen upon it like the stars.”
Muslim recorded it from [Ibrāhīm ibn] Muḥammad ibn ʿArʿarah, from Ḥaramī ibn ʿUmārah, from Shuʿbah, exactly as al-Bukhārī narrated it. He likewise recorded it from Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Bazyʿ, from Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allah—who is Ibn Abī ʿAdī—from Shuʿbah, with the same wording (4).
This al-Mustawrid is Ibn Shaddād ibn ʿAmr al-Fihrī, a distinguished Companion. al-Bukhārī cites his report in suspension, whereas Muslim transmits it with a continuous chain. The authors of the four Sunan have also narrated from him, and he possesses several hadiths (5).
