Khaythamah, from Simāk ibn Ḥarb, from Jābir ibn Samurah, who related from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ:
“I shall precede you to the Pool. The distance between its two ends is like that between Sanʿāʾ and Aylah, and the ewers upon it look as though they were the stars.”
Muslim likewise recorded it from Abū Hammām through this same chain, using the wording, “I am your forerunner at the Pool…,” and the remainder is identical. (1)
[Another route from Jābir ibn Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him)]
Muslim said: Qutaybah ibn Saʿīd and Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah related to us; both said: Ḥātim ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to us, from al-Muhājir ibn Mismār, from ʿĀmir ibn Saʿd ibn Abī Waqqāṣ, who said:
I wrote to Jābir ibn Samurah, sending my servant Nāfiʿ, asking, “Tell me something you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” He wrote back to me: “I heard him say, ‘I am the forerunner at the Pool.’” (2)
Narration of Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him)
Imām Aḥmad said: Rūḥ narrated to us; Zakariyyā ibn Isḥāq narrated to us; Abū al-Zubayr narrated that he heard Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allah say: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,
“I will be at the Pool, watching those who come to me.”
He continued, “Then some people will be seized away from me, and I will say, ‘My Lord, they are of me and of my community.’ It will be said, ‘You do not know what they did after you; they never ceased, after your departure, to turn back on their heels.’”
Jābir added that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,
“The Pool is a month’s journey across, its sides equal in length—meaning its width equals its length. Its goblets are like the stars of the sky; its fragrance is more pleasant than musk and its color is whiter than milk. Whoever drinks from it will never thirst again.”
This chain is sound according to the criterion of Muslim, though he did not record it (3). Through Zakariyyā → Abū al-Zubayr → Jābir, six hadiths are transmitted, and this is not among them (4).
[Another route from Jābir (may Allah be pleased with him)]
Abū Bakr al-Bazzār said: Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar ibn Hayyāj related to us; Yaḥyā ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Arḥabī narrated to us; ʿUbaydah ibn al-Aswad narrated to us, from Mujālid, from ʿĀmir—namely al-Shaʿbī—from Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allah, who reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,
“I shall precede you to the Pool, and I will take pride in you before the other communities, so do not revert after me into disbelief, killing one another.”
A man asked, “O Messenger of Allah, how wide is it?” He replied,
“[It is as wide] as the distance between Aylah—” and, I think, he added:—
