[Another chain from Thawban]
Ahmad said: Ḥusayn ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; Ibn ʿAyyāsh narrated to us, from Muḥammad ibn al-Muhājir, from al-ʿAbbās ibn Sālim al-Lakhmī.
He said: ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz sent for Abū Sallām al-Ḥabashī and had him brought by the courier service so that he might ask him about the Pool. When Abū Sallām was ushered in, he questioned him. He replied:
“I heard Thawban say: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
‘My Pool extends from ʿAdan to ʿAmmān al-Balqāʾ. Its water is whiter than milk and sweeter than honey; its goblets are as numerous as the stars. Whoever drinks from it once will never again feel thirst. The first people to reach it will be the poor among the Emigrants.’
ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb—may Allah be pleased with him—asked, ‘Who are they, O Messenger of Allah?’ He said:
‘They are the disheveled of hair, the soiled of clothes, those who do not marry women of luxury, and before whom the doors of palaces are not opened.’
ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz then said, “I have married women of luxury and the doors of palaces have been opened for me—unless Allah shows me mercy. By Allah, I will not oil my head until it becomes unkempt, nor will I wash the garment next to my body until it becomes dirty.”
Al-Tirmidhī also recorded this report in Kitāb al-Zuhd through Muḥammad ibn Ismāʿīl, from Yaḥyā ibn Ṣāliḥ; and Ibn Mājah recorded it there through Maḥmūd ibn Khālid al-Dimashqī, from Marwān ibn Muḥammad al-Ṭāṭarī—both from Muḥammad ibn al-Muhājir, from al-ʿAbbās ibn Sālim, from Abū Sallām, with the same wording.
Our shaykh al-Mizzī said in Al-Aṭrāf: it was likewise narrated by al-Walīd ibn Muslim, from Yaḥyā ibn al-Ḥārith, Shaybah ibn al-Aḥnaf, and others, from Abū Sallām.
Abū Bakr ibn Abī ʿĀṣim said: Hishām ibn ʿAmmār narrated to us; Ṣadaqah narrated to us; Zayd ibn Wāqid narrated to us; Busr ibn ʿUbayd Allah narrated to me; Abū Sallām al-Aswad narrated to us, from Thawban, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“My Pool spans the distance from ʿAdan to ʿAmmān. It is whiter than milk, sweeter than honey, and more fragrant than musk; its goblets are like the stars of the sky. Whoever drinks from it once will never again feel thirst, and the people who will come to me there in greatest numbers are the poor among the Emigrants.”
We asked, “Who are they, O Messenger of Allah?” He answered:
“They are the unkempt of hair, the grimy of clothes, those who do not marry women of luxury, nor are the doors of palaces opened for them—people who discharge what is due from them while what is due to them is withheld.”
This is a good chain; all praise and grace belong to Allah. (1)
[Narration of Jābir ibn Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him)]
Abū Yaʿlā [al-Mawṣilī] said: Abū Hammām al-Walīd ibn Shujāʿ—[my father]—narrated to us; Ziyād ibn
