and they prostrated before you; so intercede for us with your Lord. Do you not see the predicament we are in? Do you not see what has overtaken us?’
Adam will answer, ‘Today my Lord has become angry with an anger such as He has never shown before, nor will ever show again. He forbade me the tree, but I disobeyed. Myself, myself, myself! Go to someone else; go to Noah.’
They will go to Noah and say, ‘O Noah, you were the first of the messengers sent to the people of the earth, and Allah named you a grateful servant. Intercede for us with your Lord; do you not see the state we are in? Do you not see what has befallen us?’
Noah will reply, ‘Today my Lord has become angry with an anger such as He has never shown before, nor will ever show again. I made a supplication against my people. Myself, myself, myself! Go to someone else; go to Abraham.’
They will go to Abraham and say, ‘O Abraham, you are Allah’s prophet and His intimate friend among the people of the earth; intercede for us with your Lord. Do you not see the predicament we are in? Do you not see what has overtaken us?’
He will say, ‘Today my Lord has become angry with an anger such as He has never shown before, nor will ever show again’—and he will mention his (three) statements—‘Myself, myself, myself! Go to someone else; go to Moses.’
They will go to Moses and say, ‘O Moses, you are a messenger of Allah; Allah chose you with His messages and His speech to mankind. Intercede for us with your Lord; do you not see the state we are in? Do you not see what has befallen us?’
Moses will say, ‘Today my Lord has become angry with an anger such as He has never shown before, nor will ever show again. I killed a soul I was not commanded to kill. Myself, myself, myself! Go to someone else; go to Jesus.’
They will go to Jesus and say, ‘O Jesus, you are a messenger of Allah, His Word which He bestowed upon Mary, and a spirit from Him’—the narrator added, ‘That is how it is’—‘and you spoke to people while still in the cradle. Intercede for us with your Lord; do you not see the predicament we are in? Do you not see what has overtaken us?’
Jesus will reply, ‘Today my Lord has become angry with an anger such as He has never shown before, nor will ever show again’—and he will mention no sin—‘Go to someone else; go to Muhammad.’
So they will come to me and say, ‘O Muhammad, you are the Messenger of Allah and the Seal of the Prophets. Allah has already forgiven you your past and future sins. Intercede for us with your Lord; do you not see the predicament we are in? Do you not see what has overtaken us?’
I will rise and come beneath the Throne. There I will fall in prostration before my Lord—may He be Exalted—and Allah will open up for me and inspire me with praises and words of glorification such as He has not bestowed upon anyone before me.
It will be said, ‘O Muhammad, raise your head; speak and you will be heard; ask and you will be granted; intercede and your intercession will be accepted.’
I will say, ‘My Lord, my community, my community. O my Lord, my community, my community. O my Lord, my community, my community.’
It will be said, ‘O Muhammad, admit from your community those who will have no reckoning through the rightmost gate of the gates of Paradise; yet they may share the other gates with the rest of the people.’
Then he said, ‘By Him in Whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad, the distance between the two leaves of one of the gates of Paradise is like the distance between Mecca and Hajar, or between Mecca and Busra.’
Al-Bukhari and Muslim both narrated it in the Sahihayn from the report of Abu Hayan—Yahya ibn Saʿid ibn Hayan—with this chain. ⦗1⦘
Abu Bakr ibn Abi al-Dunya also related it in al-Ahwāl through Abu Khaythama, from Jarir, from ʿUmārah ibn al-Qaʿqaʿ, from
