with its horn; among them there will be neither a crooked-horned nor a broken-horned beast. (1) When the last of them has passed over him, the first is brought back upon him again, on a Day whose span is fifty thousand years, until judgment is concluded among the people and he is shown his path.
If he owns sheep and fails to give their due, whether in hardship or in ease, those sheep will come on the Day of Resurrection in the most vigorous, largest, fattest, and fiercest condition they ever attained. A level, stone-strewn plain will be spread out for them; every cloven-footed animal will trample him with its hoof and every horned animal will gore him with its horn—none of them crooked-horned or broken-horned—then, once the last of them has passed over him, the first will be returned upon him again, on a Day whose span is fifty thousand years, until judgment is concluded among mankind and he is shown his path. (2)
Al-Bayhaqī said: This can only be understood as estimating that Day as fifty thousand years according to your reckoning—and Allah knows best—and it will be so only for the one who is doomed, the one whose sin is not forgiven. As for the believer whose sin has been forgiven, Abu ʿAbd Allah al-Ḥāfiẓ informed us; al-Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad ibn Ḥalīm related to us; Abu al-Muwajjih related to us; ʿAbdān related to us; ʿAbd Allah—meaning Ibn al-Mubārak—related to us, from Maʿmar, from Qatādah, from Zurārah ibn Awfā, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: “For the believers, the Day of Resurrection will be no longer than the time between the noon and afternoon prayers.” He then said: “This is the version that is preserved.”
It has also been transmitted as a marfūʿ report: Abu ʿAbd Allah al-Ḥāfiẓ told us; ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar ibn ʿAlī al-Jawharī of Marw told us; Yaḥyā ibn Sāsawayh ibn ʿAbd al-Karīm told us; Suwayd ibn Naṣr told us; Ibn al-Mubārak told us … and he mentioned it with his chain as a marfūʿ narration. (3)
Yaʿqūb ibn Sufyān said: Ḥarmalah ibn Yaḥyā narrated to us; Ibn Wahb narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Maysarah narrated to me; from Abu Hāniʾ; from Abu ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Ḥubulī; from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ recited the verse: “The Day when mankind will stand before the Lord of the worlds” (6) [al-Mutaffifīn: 6]. He then said, “What will your state be when Allah gathers you together as arrows are gathered in a quiver—fifty thousand years during which He will not look at you?” (4)
Abu Bakr ibn Abī al-Dunyā said: Ḥamzah ibn al-ʿAbbās narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUthmān narrated to us; Ibn al-Mubārak narrated to us; Sufyān narrated to us; from Maysarah; from al-Minhāl ibn ʿAmr; from Abu ʿUbaydah; from ʿAbd Allah ibn Masʿūd, who said: “The forenoon of the Day of Resurrection will not reach its midpoint before these and those take their siesta.” Then he recited: “Indeed, their place of repose will surely be the Blaze.” Ibn al-Mubārak remarked: This is how it appears in the recitation of Ibn Masʿūd.
He also said: Isḥāq ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to us; Wakīʿ narrated to us; Sufyān narrated to us; from Maysarah al-Nahdī; from al-Minhāl ibn ʿAmr; from Abu ʿUbaydah; from ʿAbd Allah ibn
