and its open lands; its seas will have been set ablaze, its valleys and heights made level, its towns and villages laid waste, its palaces, houses, and marketplaces gone. It will have been shaken with its destined convulsion and will spew out its burdens, while man cries, “What is the matter with it?” On that day it will relate its stories, for your Lord will have inspired it.
Likewise they will find that the heavens have been exchanged for others: their stars grown dim and scattered, their extremities rent, their edges burst asunder, and the angels encircling their horizons.
The sun and the moon will both be eclipsed—indeed extinguished—gathered together in one place, then rolled up and hurled into the Fire, as will be mentioned in the section entitled al-Nayyirān: “They will be rolled up like two bulls whose hamstrings have been severed.”
Abū Bakr ibn ʿAyyāsh said: Ibn ʿAbbās stated, “They will emerge from their graves and behold an earth other than the one they had known, and people other than those with whom they were familiar.” He then recited in illustration:
“The people are not the people you once knew,
Nor is the dwelling the dwelling you used to recognize.”
Allah the Exalted has said in His Noble Book: “On the Day when the earth is replaced by another earth—and the heavens as well—and all will appear before Allah, the One, the Overwhelming (48)” [Ibrāhīm: 48].
And He said: “On the Day when the sky will shake with a violent shaking (9) and the mountains will move away with a [terrible] motion (10)” [Al-Ṭūr: 9-10].
And He said: “When the sky splits open and becomes rose-red, like molten oil (37)” [Al-Raḥmān: 37].
And He said: “The earth and the mountains will be lifted up and crushed with a single blow (14)… ” [Al-Ḥāqqah: 14].
And He, mighty and majestic, said: “When the sun is folded up (1), when the stars fall and lose their luster (2), when the mountains are set in motion (3), and when pregnant she-camels are neglected (4)… ” [Al-Takwīr: 1-4].
Both Ṣaḥīḥs record—through the narration of Abū Ḥāzim, from Sahl ibn Saʿd—that the Prophet ﷺ said: “On the Day of Resurrection people will be assembled upon a white, barren plain (1), smooth like a round loaf of pure white bread (2), with no landmark for anyone (3).”
Muḥammad ibn Qays and Saʿīd ibn Jubayr said: “The earth will be changed into a white loaf of bread; the believer will eat from it beneath his very feet.”
Al-Aʿmash, from Khaythamah, from Ibn Masʿūd, reported: “On the Day of Resurrection the whole earth will be fire, and Paradise will be beyond it, its maidens and goblets plainly visible. Sweat will bridle the people and rise upon them to every extent, yet even so they will not have reached the reckoning.” Al-Aʿmash similarly transmitted this from al-Minhāl, from Qays ibn al-Sakan, from Ibn Masʿūd.
And Isrāʾīl and Shuʿbah, from Abū Isḥāq, from ʿAmr ibn Maymūn, from Ibn Masʿūd, said concerning the verse, “On the Day when the earth is replaced by another earth” [Ibrāhīm: 48]: “It will be an earth white like gleaming silver, spotless—no blood has ever been shed upon it, nor any sin committed thereon. Sight will penetrate everyone and the caller will be heard by all, while they stand barefoot and naked as they were created—he added, I think—standing until sweat bridles them.”
