Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

and the angels will greet them, saying, “This is your Day—the one you were promised (103). On the Day We fold up the heaven like a scribe rolls up a scroll; just as We originated the first creation, so shall We bring it back—an obligation incumbent upon Us. We shall surely do it (1).” [Al-Anbiyā]

Abu Bakr ibn Abi al-Dunya said: Abū Ḥafṣ al-Ṣaffār informed us; Jaʿfar ibn Sulaymān narrated to us; Ibrāhīm ibn ʿĪsā al-Yashkarī narrated: “It has reached us that when the believer is raised from his grave, two angels meet him. One carries a piece of brocade containing ice and musk, and the other holds a goblet—one of the goblets of Paradise—filled with a drink. As soon as the believer emerges, the first angel mixes the ice with the musk and sprinkles it over him, while the second pours him a draught and hands it to him. He drinks, and thereafter will never thirst again until he enters Paradise.

“As for the wretched—Allah’s refuge is sought—Allah the Exalted says: ‘Whoever turns away from the remembrance of the All-Merciful, We assign to him a devil who becomes his companion (36); they bar them from the path, yet they think they are rightly guided (37); until, when he comes to Us, he will say, “Would that there were the distance of the two easts between me and you! What an evil companion!” (38) But it will never benefit you today, for you wronged yourselves, that you are sharing alike in the punishment.’ [Al-Zukhruf]

“We have mentioned in the Tafsīr that when the disbeliever rises from his grave, his devil seizes him by the hand and never leaves him until the two of them are hurled into the Fire. The same holds for every profligate sinner who is heedless of Allah’s remembrance and neglects His command.

“Allah, Exalted is He, also says: ‘Every soul will come, with it a driver and a witness’ [Qāf: 21]—that is, an angel who drives him to the place of gathering and another who testifies to his deeds. This applies to both the righteous and the wicked, each according to his state. ‘You were heedless of this; now We have removed your covering, so your sight today is sharp indeed’ [Qāf: 22]. ‘And his companion will say, “This is what I have ready with me”’ [Qāf: 23]—meaning: this is the one I was charged with guarding. Then Allah will say to the driver and the witness: ‘Cast into Hell every stubborn disbeliever (24), one who denied the good, transgressed, and was steeped in doubt’ [Qāf: 24-25]—that is, he possessed no goodness and prevented others from goodness, all the while lost in suspicion.

“The discourse then turns to one guilty of something even worse, though all four of these loathsome traits—the vilest of qualities—may combine in a single servant, the worst and most heinous being to associate others with Allah. Concerning such a person He says: ‘Whoever sets up another god alongside Allah—then cast him into the severe punishment…,’ up to His words: ‘On the Day We will say to Hell, “Are you full?” and it will reply, “Are there any more?” (30) And Paradise will be brought near to the God-fearing, not far away…’ and the verses that follow [Qāf: 26-31].

Imām Aḥmad reported: Yaḥyā—meaning Ibn Saʿīd al-Qaṭṭān—narrated to us, from Ibn ʿAjlān, from ʿAmr ibn Shuʿayb, from his father, from his grandfather, that the Prophet ﷺ said:

“The arrogant will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection like tiny pearls, in the form of men. Every sort of humiliation will cover them until they are thrust into a prison in Hell called Bawlas. The fires of Anyār will tower above them, and they will be given to drink from the scum of the people of the Fire—the foul pus that oozes from them (2).”

Al-Tirmidhī and al-Nasā’ī likewise related it through Suwayd ibn
