to the mouths of the people, or to their ears.” Thawr was uncertain which of the two he had heard. Muslim likewise narrated it from Qutaybah, and al-Bukhari transmitted it from ʿAbd al-ʿAziz ibn ʿAbd Allah, from Sulayman ibn Bilal, from Thawr ibn Zayd, from Salim Abū l-Ghayth, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with the same wording.⦗1⦘
Imam Ahmad said: Al-Ḍaḥḥāk ibn Makhlad narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd ibn Jaʿfar narrated to us; my father told me, from Saʿid ibn ʿUmayr al-Anṣari, who said: “I was sitting with ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿUmar and Abū Saʿid al-Khudri. One of them said to the other, ‘What have you heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ concerning how far people’s sweat will reach on the Day of Resurrection?’ One of them replied, ‘Up to his earlobes,’ while the other said, ‘It will bridle him completely.’ Ibn ʿUmar then drew a line—Abū ʿĀṣim pointed with his finger from the lower part of his earlobes to his mouth—and said, ‘I see no difference between the two descriptions.’ This narration is unique to Ahmad, and its chain is sound and strong.⦗2⦘
Abū Bakr ibn Abī al-Dunyā said: Al-Ḥasan ibn ʿĪsā narrated to us; Ibn al-Mubarak narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Raḥman ibn Yazid ibn Jabir narrated to us; Sulaym ibn ʿAmir told me; al-Miqdad ibn al-Aswad told me: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “When the Day of Resurrection comes, the sun will be brought close to the servants until it is a mile—or two miles—away.” Sulaym said, “I do not know which mile he meant: the mile of earthly measure, or the small applicator used for kohl.” He continued, “The sun will melt them, and they will stand in sweat according to their deeds: some will have sweat up to their heels, some up to their knees, some up to their waists,⦗3⦘ and some will be bridled by it entirely.” He said, “I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ point to his mouth,” and added, “It will bridle him completely.” Al-Tirmidhi likewise related it from Suwayd ibn Naṣr, from Ibn al-Mubarak, and declared it ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ; Muslim also recorded it from al-Ḥakam ibn Musa, from Yaḥya ibn Ḥamzah, from Ibn Jabir with similar wording.⦗4⦘
Ibn al-Mubarak reported from Malik ibn Mighwal, from ʿUbayd Allah ibn al-ʿIyzar, who said: “On the Day of Resurrection people’s feet will be packed together like arrows in a quiver; blessed indeed is the one who finds room to place his two feet. The sun will then be brought near to their heads until—he said—either a mile or two remains between it and their heads, and its heat will be increased sixty-nine times.”⦗5⦘
Al-Walid ibn Muslim reported from Abū Bakr ibn Saʿid, from Mughīth ibn Sumayy, who said: “The sun will stand motionless⦗6⦘ above their heads only a few cubits away; the gates of Hell will then be opened, its scorching winds and blasts will buffet them, and its burning gusts will surge over them…"
