Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

He said to her brothers, “Take her to that monk so he can treat her.” They brought her to him, and he tended to her. She remained in his care, and one day, as he was with her, she pleased him; he had intercourse with her, and she became pregnant. He then killed her. Later her brothers came.

Satan said to the monk, “I am the one who has been pursuing you—you wore me out. I am the one who brought this upon you, so obey me and I will rescue you from the trouble I have caused. Prostrate to me just once.” The monk prostrated to him, and as soon as he did, Satan declared, “I disown you; indeed, I fear Allah, Lord of all worlds.”

That is the meaning of His statement: “Like Satan when he says to man, ‘Disbelieve!’ but when the man disbelieves he says, ‘I am innocent of you; indeed, I fear Allah, Lord of all worlds.’” (Qur’an 59:16)

(1) The phrase falamma sujida lahu (“Then, when he prostrated to him”) is an addition in manuscript B, and corresponds to the reading reported by Ibn Jarir.
