—and, I think, he also said: “and Sūrah Hūd.” Al-Tirmidhī likewise transmitted it through ʿAbbās al-ʿAnbarī from ʿAbd ar-Razzāq with this same chain. Imām Aḥmad also narrated it from Ibrāhīm ibn Khālid, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Baḥīr, from ʿAbd ar-Raḥmān ibn Yazīd—one of the people of Ṣanʿāʾ, who was more knowledgeable about the ḥalāl and ḥarām (lawful and unlawful) than Wahb ibn Munabbih—on the authority of Ibn ʿUmar … and he mentioned something similar.⦗1⦘
In another report he ﷺ said:
“Hūd and its sisters have made my hair turn gray.”⦗2⦘
The verses on this theme are exceedingly numerous and appear in most sūrahs of the magnificent Qur’an. In our work al-Tafsīr we have, under every verse that depicts the Day of Resurrection, cited the aḥādīth and early reports that explain it.
Reports and traditions describing the terrors of the Day of Resurrection, the momentous events and hardships that will occur on that Day, and what it holds of forgiveness, mercy, divine pleasure, gardens and fires
Imām Aḥmad said: Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd al-Malik narrated to us; ʿAbd ar-Raḥmān ibn Abī aṣ-Ṣahbāʾ narrated to us; Nāfiʿ Abū Ghālib al-Bāhilī narrated to us; he said that Anas ibn Mālik related that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“People will be raised on the Day of Resurrection while the sky will ṭaṭush upon them.” This ḥadīth is unique to Aḥmad, and its chain is sound.⦗3⦘

The second—which is nearer to the mark, and Allah knows best—is that it refers to intense heat.
Allah the Exalted says: “Do those people not realize that they will be resurrected for a tremendous Day, the Day when all people will stand before the Lord of the worlds?” (83:4-6).
It is affirmed in the Ṣaḥīḥ that “they will stand in perspiration—that is, sweat—up to the middles of their ears.”⦗4⦘ In another ḥadīth they will differ in this according to their deeds, as has been mentioned, and in the ḥadīth of intercession, to be cited later, it is stated that the sun will be brought near to the servants on the Day of Resurrection until it is only a mile away; at that point they will sweat in proportion to their deeds.
Imām Aḥmad also said: Qutaybah narrated to us; ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; from Thawr, from Abū l-Ghayth, from Abū Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “On the Day of Resurrection the sweat will penetrate the earth to a depth of seventy arm-lengths, and it will reach…"
