Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

And He, exalted, also says:
“On the Day He will call them and ask, ‘What answer did you give to the messengers?’ But on that Day every report will be shut off from them, and they will not even question one another.” (28:65–66)

And He, exalted, says:
“This is a Day on which they will not speak, nor will they be granted permission to offer excuses. Woe on that Day to the deniers!” (77:35–37)

Ibn ʿAbbās said: that is, they will not utter any plea that can benefit them.

As for His words:
“Then their only trial will be to say, ‘By Allah, our Lord, we were never idolaters.’ Look how they lie against themselves, and how what they invented deserts them.” (6:23–24)
—and likewise His saying:
“On the Day Allah resurrects them all together, they will swear to Him just as they now swear to you, thinking they are on something. Surely, they are the liars.” (58:18)—
this occurs in another circumstance, as Ibn ʿAbbās explained to someone who asked him about it, as al-Bukhārī has narrated from him.

Likewise His saying:
“They will turn to one another and question each other. They will say, ‘You used to come at us from the right.’ They will reply, ‘No indeed; you yourselves were never believers. We had no authority over you—rather, you were a defiant people. So the word of our Lord has been fulfilled against us; we are bound to taste it. We led you astray, for we ourselves were astray. So on that Day they will share in the punishment together. Thus do We deal with the criminals: when it was said to them, “There is no god but Allah,” they grew arrogant and said, “Shall we really abandon our gods for a mad poet?” Not at all; he came with the truth and confirmed the messengers…’” (37:27–37), up to His words: “Indeed, Noah called upon Us, and We are the best of responders.” (37:75)

The verses that speak of the Day of Resurrection and its terrors are exceedingly numerous, such as the closing verses of Sūrat Hūd:
“Surely in that is a sign for whoever fears the punishment of the Hereafter. That is a Day on which mankind will be gathered, and that is a Day to be witnessed. We delay it only for a fixed term. On the Day it comes, no soul will speak except by His permission; among them will be the miserable and the happy. As for those who are miserable, they will be in the Fire; therein they will sigh and groan, remaining therein as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except as your Lord wills—surely your Lord does whatever He intends. And as for those who are made happy, they will be in Paradise, abiding therein as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except as your Lord wills—an unending gift.” (11:103–108)
—that is, a gift that will never be cut off.

The same applies to Sūrat ʿAmma Yatasaʾalūn (an-Nabaʾ), Sūrat Idhā ash-Shamsu Kuwwirat (at-Takwīr), Sūrat Idhā as-Samāʾu Infatarat (al-Infitar), Sūrat Idhā as-Samāʾu Inshaqqat (al-Inshiqāq), Sūrat al-Mutaffifīn in its entirety, Sūrat al-Mursalāt, an-Naziʿāt, Sūrat Hal Atā ʿalā al-Insān (ad-Dahr), Sūrat Wa-as-Samāʾi Dhāti al-Burūj, Sūrat Idhā Zulzilati, the end of Sūrat al-ʿĀdiyāt, al-Qāriʿah, the end of Sūrat al-Hākum at-Takāthur, and Sūrat al-Humazah.

—the storyteller of Ṣanʿāʾ—reported that ʿAbd ar-Raḥmān ibn Yazīd al-Ṣanʿānī informed him that he heard Ibn ʿUmar say: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever wishes to look at the Day of Resurrection as though he is seeing it with his very eyes, let him recite: Idhā ash-Shamsu Kuwwirat, Idhā as-Samāʾu Infatarat, and Idhā as-Samāʾu Inshaqqat.”
