Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

“O tranquil soul! Return to your Lord—well-pleased and well-pleasing. Enter among My servants, and enter My Paradise.” (Q 89:27–30)

And He, exalted, says:

“Has there come to you the tale of the Overwhelming Event? Faces that Day will be humbled, toiling and weary, roasting in a scorching Fire, given drink from a boiling spring. They will have no food except dry, thorny plants, which neither nourish nor satisfy hunger. Other faces that Day will be radiant, delighted with their striving, in a lofty Garden where they hear no idle talk; therein is a flowing spring, raised couches, goblets set close at hand, cushions arrayed, and carpets spread about.” (Q 88:1–16)

And He, exalted, says:

“When the Inevitable Event occurs, none can deny its coming; abasing some, exalting others. When the earth is violently shaken and the mountains are crushed to powder so that they become scattered dust, you will be three groups: the people of the Right—what of the people of the Right?—the people of the Left—what of the people of the Left?—and the foremost, the foremost: they will be the ones brought near, in Gardens of Bliss… up to His words: ‘This is their hospitality on the Day of Recompense.’” (Q 56:1–12, 56)

He, glorified, then sets out in this surah the recompense of each of these three groups, and He describes the glad tidings that will reach them at the moment of death and in their final agony—so vividly that one feels he is watching it with his very eyes.

And He, exalted, says:

“So turn away from them. The Day the Caller will summon to a dreadful thing…”—and at the close of the surah: “But the Hour is their appointed time, and the Hour is more calamitous and more bitter.” (Q 54:6–55)

And He says:

“On the Day when the earth is exchanged for another earth and the heavens likewise, and they appear before Allah, the One, the All-Dominating. You will see the guilty on that Day bound together in fetters; their garments made of tar, and the Fire covering their faces, so that Allah may repay every soul for what it has earned. Allah is swift in reckoning.” (Q 14:48–51)

And He says:

“He is Exalted in rank, Lord of the Throne; He sends the Spirit, by His command, to whom He wills of His servants, that he may warn of the Day of Meeting—the Day when they will come forth and nothing about them is hidden from Allah. ‘To whom belongs sovereignty today?’ ‘To Allah, the One, the All-Dominating!’ Today every soul will be repaid for what it earned; today no injustice will be done. Indeed, Allah is swift in reckoning. Warn them of the Approaching Day, when hearts will choke in the throats, suppressing their anguish; the wrongdoers will have no devoted friend nor any intercessor who is heeded. He knows the treachery of the eyes and what breasts conceal, and Allah judges in truth.” (Q 40:15–19)

And He says:

“We have certainly given you a reminder from Us. Whoever turns away from it will carry a burden on the Day of Resurrection, dwelling under it forever—how wretched a load it will be for them on that Day—the Day the Trumpet is blown and We gather the sinners that Day, blue-eyed…” up to His words: “and he will fear neither injustice nor deprivation.” (Q 20:99–112)

And He says:

“O you who believe, spend of what We have provided for you before there comes a Day in which there will be no trading, no friendship, and no intercession; and the unbelievers—they are the wrongdoers.” (Q 2:254)

And He says:

“Be mindful of a Day when you shall be returned to Allah; then every soul will be paid in full for what it has earned, and they will not be wronged.” (Q 2:281)

And He says:

“On the Day when some faces will be bright and some faces will be dark…” (Q 3:106)

And He says:

“It is not for a prophet to defraud; whoever defrauds will bring whatever he defrauded on the Day of Resurrection…” (Q 3:161)
