Then al-Bayhaqī adduced proof for this last interpretation with what Muslim has transmitted in his Ṣaḥīḥ, through the chain of al-Aʿmash, from Abū Sufyān, from Jābir, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Every servant will be resurrected in the state in which he died.” (1)
He added: We have also related from Faḍālah ibn ʿUbayd that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Whoever dies in one of these conditions will be raised in that very condition on the Day of Resurrection.” (2)
Abū Bakr ibn Abī al-Dunyā said: Aḥmad ibn Ibrāhīm ibn Kathīr informed us; Zayd ibn Ḥubbāb narrated to us, from Muʿāwiyah ibn Ṣāliḥ, who said: Saʿīd ibn Hāniʾ told me, from ʿAmr ibn al-Aswad, who said:
Muʿādh instructed me to look after his wife, then he set out and she died. We buried her, and after we had raised our hands from completing her burial he returned and asked, “In what did you shroud her?” We replied, “In her own clothes.” He ordered that the grave be reopened, wrapped her in new garments, and said, “Treat your dead with fine shrouds, for they will be assembled in them.” (3)
He also said: Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn narrated to us; Yaḥyā ibn Isḥāq—[Isḥāq ibn Sayyār ibn Naṣr informed us]—transmitted from al-Walīd ibn Abī Marwān (4), from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: “The dead will be gathered in their shrouds.” (5)
The same has been reported from Abū al-ʿĀliyah (6).
And Ṣāliḥ al-Murrī said:
“It has reached me that people will emerge from their graves wrapped in soiled shrouds, with worn-out bodies, their faces discoloured, their hair dishevelled, their frames exhausted, their hearts fluttering in their chests and throats. No one will know where his destination lies until the assembly disperses: some will depart toward Paradise, others toward the Fire.”
Then he cried out at the top of his voice:
“Alas for the wretched destination of the one You do not envelop in Your vast mercy—when our breasts have been constricted by immense sins and crimes for which none forgives but You!”
[He then mentioned some of the terrors of the Day of Resurrection.]
Allah, Exalted is He, says:
“When the Event befalls—on that Day the heaven will be rent asunder and will become fragile, and the angels will stand at its edges, and your Lord’s Throne will be borne…” (Q 69:15-17)
