–to your mother—al-Hāwiyah, the Abyss—for there will be no injustice today. Allah is swift in reckoning. On that Day not an angel will remain, nor a sent prophet, nor a truthful saint, nor a martyr, nor any human being, without thinking, in view of the severity of the reckoning, that he is doomed—except one whom Allah, Exalted is He, protects.
This ḥadīth is gharīb through this chain, although part of it is corroborated in the Ṣaḥīḥ, as will be explained shortly, if Allah wills.
Al-Ṭabarānī said: Ḥusayn ibn Isḥāq al-Tustarī narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Abān al-Wāsiṭī narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Muzanī narrated to us, from Saʿīd ibn al-Marzubān Abū Saʿd, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Abī Rabāḥ, from al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī, who said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘People will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection barefoot and naked.’
A woman asked, ‘O Messenger of Allah, how will we be able to look at one another?’
He answered, ‘Their eyes will be transfixed,’ and he lifted his head toward the sky.
She said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, supplicate to Allah to cover my modesty.’
He said, ‘O Allah, conceal her modesty.’ (1)
Al-Bayhaqī said: As for the report related to us by Abū ʿAbd-Allah al-Ḥāfiẓ—Abū Muḥammad ʿAbd-Allah ibn Isḥāq al-Khurāsānī al-ʿAdl informed us; Muḥammad ibn al-Haytham the judge narrated to us; Ibn Abī Maryam narrated to us; Yaḥyā ibn Ayyūb narrated to us, from Ibn al-Hād, from Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī—that when death approached him he called for new clothes, put them on and said, ‘I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “A Muslim will be resurrected in the clothes in which he dies.”’ This ḥadīth is also recorded by Abū Dāwūd in the Sunan, transmitted from al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī, from Ibn Abī Maryam (2).
Al-Bayhaqī then set about reconciling this report with the earlier narrations that people will be raised barefoot, naked and uncircumcised, by offering three answers:
-
Those clothes will decay after they rise from their graves; when they arrive at the place of standing they will be naked, after which they will be dressed in garments from Paradise.
-
After the Prophets are clothed, then the veracious, and then those after them in order of rank, each person will receive clothing similar to that in which he died; once they enter Paradise they will be robed in the garments of Paradise.
-
What is meant by “clothes” here is deeds: a person will be resurrected with the deeds upon which he died, whether good or evil.
Allah, Exalted is He, says, “But the garment of God-consciousness—that is best” (Q 7:26); and He says, “And purify your garments” (Q 74:4). Qatādah said: “Your garments means your deeds, so make them sincere.”
