Abū Bakr ibn Abī al-Dunyā also said:
Abū ʿAmmār al-Ḥusayn ibn Ḥurayth narrated to us; al-Faḍl ibn Mūsā narrated to us, from ʿĀʾidh ibn Shurayḥ, from Anas, who said:
ʿĀʾishah asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, saying, “O Messenger of Allah, how will the men be gathered?” He replied, “Barefoot and naked.” After a while she asked, “O Messenger of Allah, how will the women be gathered?” He said, “Likewise: barefoot and naked.” She exclaimed, “Alas for the shame of the Day of Resurrection!” He answered, “Regarding which of those things are you asking? A verse has just been revealed to me; whether you have clothes on or not will not harm you.” She asked, “Which verse is that, O Messenger of Allah?” He said, “For each person among them, that Day, there shall be a matter fully occupying him” (Q 80:37). Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Yaʿlā al-Mawṣilī said:
Rawḥ ibn Ḥātim narrated to us; Hushaym narrated to us, from al-Kawthar—meaning Ibn Ḥakīm—from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“People will be gathered just as their mothers bore them: barefoot, naked and uncircumcised.”
ʿĀʾishah said, “And the women too, may my father and mother be your ransom?” He replied, “Yes.” She said, “What a shame!” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “What has astonished you, daughter of Abū Bakr?” She replied, “I am amazed at your statement that men and women will be gathered barefoot, naked and uncircumcised, each of them looking at the other.”
He tapped her on the shoulder and said, “Daughter of Abū Quḥāfah, people will on that Day be far too preoccupied to look around. Their eyes will be raised to the sky while they stand for forty years, neither eating nor drinking, staring upward for forty years. Among them is one whose sweat reaches his feet, another whose sweat reaches his shins, another whose sweat reaches his belly, and another whom his sweat bridles because of the length of the standing.
“Then Allah will show mercy to the servants and will command the angels who are nearest to Him to carry the Throne; they will bring it down from the heavens to the earth until it is placed on a white land upon which no blood has ever been shed and no sin ever committed, gleaming like pure silver. The angels will then stand in ranks encircling the Throne. That will be the first day on which any eye gazes upon Allah, the Exalted.
“Then a herald will be commanded, and he will call out in a voice heard by the two races, jinn and humans: ‘Where is so-and-so, son of so-and-so? Where is so-and-so, son of so-and-so?’ The people will crane their necks toward that voice, and the herald will come out from the assembly; Allah will make him known to the people.
“Next it will be said, ‘Bring along his good deeds,’ and Allah will acquaint the people of the gathering with those good deeds. When he is made to stand before the Lord of the worlds, it will be said, ‘Where are the people he wronged?’ They will come, one man after another, and it will be said to him, ‘Did you wrong so-and-so in such-and-such a matter?’ He will say, ‘Yes, my Lord.’ That is the day when their tongues, their hands and their feet will bear witness against them about what they used to do. His good deeds will be taken from him and handed to the one he wronged—on a day when there is neither dinar nor dirham, only the taking of good deeds and the placing of evil deeds.
“Those he wronged will go on taking from his good deeds until none are left. Then the remainder—those who have taken nothing—will rise and say, ‘Why have others been satisfied while we have been left out?’ It will be said to them, ‘Do not be hasty.’ Their evil deeds will then be taken and cast upon him until no one whom he wronged has any claim left. Allah will make all those at the gathering witness this.
“When his reckoning is completed, it will be said, ‘Return to your mother.’”
