Al-Qurṭubī said:
Al-Ḥalīmī, in his work “Minhāj al-Dīn,” relates the following report: ʿAbbād ibn Kathīr narrated from Abū al-Zubayr, from Jābir, who said:
“On the Day of Resurrection the callers to prayer (muʾadhdhins) and those who proclaimed the talbiyah (the pilgrimage chant) will rise from their graves while the muʾadhdhin is still announcing the call and the pilgrim is still chanting the talbiyah. The very first to be clothed in the garments of Paradise will be Abraham, then Muḥammad, then the other prophets, followed by the muʾadhdhins …” —and he mentioned the remainder of the report (1).
Al-Qurṭubī then proceeded to explain why Abraham the Close Friend, peace be upon him, is singled out to receive clothing first on that Day. One reason, he said, is that Abraham was the first to wear trousers (sarāwīl) out of extreme modesty and concern for covering; another is that he was stripped of his clothes on the day he was cast into the fire. Allah knows best.
Al-Bayhaqī transmits, through the narration of Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Uways: “My father told me, from Muḥammad ibn Abī ʿAyyāsh, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yasār, from Sawdah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, who said:
‘The Prophet ﷺ said: “People will be resurrected barefoot, naked and uncircumcised; sweat will have bridled them, rising to the fat around the ears.” I asked, “O Messenger of Allah, alas! Will we be looking at one another?” He replied, “People will be far too occupied for that; every person that Day will have a matter sufficient to preoccupy him.”’
Its chain is sound, yet it is found neither in the Musnad nor in the canonical collections (2).
Abū Bakr ibn Abī al-Dunyā also said: “Sʿīd ibn Sulaymān narrated to us, from ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd ibn Sulaymān; Muḥammad ibn Abī Mūsā narrated to me, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yasār, from Umm Salamah, who said:
‘I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “People will be gathered barefoot and naked, just as they were first created.” Umm Salamah asked, “O Messenger of Allah, will we be looking at one another?” He answered, “People will be preoccupied.” I asked, “With what will they be preoccupied?” He said, “With the unfolding of the scrolls in which are recorded the weight of atoms and the weight of mustard seeds.”’ (3)
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Bakr al-Bazzār said: “ʿUmar ibn Shabbah narrated to us; al-Ḥusayn ibn Ḥafṣ narrated to us; Sufyān—meaning al-Thawrī—narrated to us, from Zubayd, from Murrah, from ʿAbd Allah, who said:
‘The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “You will certainly be gathered barefoot, naked and uncircumcised.”’
Al-Bazzār remarked: “I suspect that ʿUmar ibn Shabbah erred here, inserting the wording of one report into the chain of another. In reality, this ḥadīth is from Sufyān al-Thawrī, through Mughīrah ibn al-Nuʿmān, from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās. Sufyān al-Thawrī has no musnad report on the authority of Zubayd, from Murrah, from ʿAbd Allah ibn Masʿūd.”
Ibn Abī al-Dunyā likewise narrated it via ʿUmar ibn Shabbah with the same chain, and added: “And the first to be clothed on the Day of Resurrection will be Abraham (may Allah have mercy on them).” (4)
