“…O so-and-so, on that Day each person will be wholly absorbed in his own affair.” (1)
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Bakr al-Bayhaqī said:
Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Qāḍī and Abū Saʿīd Muḥammad ibn Mūsā narrated to us; they both said: Abū al-ʿAbbās Muḥammad ibn Yaʿqūb narrated to us; al-ʿAbbās ibn Muḥammad al-Dūrī narrated to us; Mālik ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Salām ibn Ḥarb narrated to us, from Abū Khālid al-Dallānī, from al-Minhāl ibn ʿAmr, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ḥārith, from Abū Hurayrah, who said:
“People will be raised barefoot, naked and uncircumcised, standing for forty years with their eyes fixed on the sky. Because of the severity of anguish, sweat will bridle them. Then it will be said: ‘Clothe Abraham,’ and he will be dressed in two qubṭiyyah robes (2) from the linens of Paradise. Thereafter Muḥammad ﷺ will be called, and the ḥawḍ (Reservoir) will be made to gush forth for him; its span is from Aylah to Mecca. He will drink from it and bathe in it, while the necks of all created beings that Day will have cracked from thirst.
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ continued: ‘I shall then be clothed in garments from Paradise, and shall stand at— or on—the right of the Kursī (Footstool); no creature will occupy that station on that Day but I. It will be said: “Ask and you will be granted; intercede and your intercession will be accepted.”’ A man rose and asked, ‘Do you hope for anything on behalf of your parents?’ He replied, ‘I will intercede for them whether I am granted permission or refused; yet I place no hope for them.’”
Al-Bayhaqī remarked: “This may have taken place before the prohibition was revealed against seeking forgiveness for the polytheists and offering the funeral prayer for the hypocrites.” (3)
Al-Qurtubī said: Ibn al-Mubārak transmitted, from Sufyān, from ʿAmr ibn Qays, from al-Minhāl ibn ʿAmr, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Ḥārith, from ʿAlī, who said: “The first to be clothed will be the Friend—that is, Abraham—in two qubṭiyyah garments, then Muḥammad in a striped ḥulla, on the right of the Throne.” (4)
Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Qurtubī, in his book al-Tadhkirah, said:
Abū Nuʿaym the ḥāfiẓ—meaning the scholar from Iṣfahān—narrated, through al-Aswad, ʿAlqamah and Abū Wāʾil, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The first to be clothed will be Abraham (peace be upon him). Allah, Exalted, will say, ‘Clothe My Friend,’ and two white rayṭah cloaks (5) will be brought for him; he will put them on and sit facing the Throne. Then my own attire will be brought; I shall don it and stand to His right in a station none but I will attain—a station for which the first and the last will envy me.” (6)
