The Story of Barsīṣā
This account is the direct opposite of the story of Jurayj, for Jurayj was kept safe, whereas this monk was put to trial and succumbed.
Ibn Jarīr said:
Yahyā ibn Ibrāhīm al-Masʿūdī narrated to us, saying: My father told me, from his father, from his grandfather, from al-Aʿmash, from ʿUmārah, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Yazīd, from ʿAbdullāh ibn Masʿūd, regarding the verse,
“Like Satan when he says to man, ‘Disbelieve!’ but when the man disbelieves he says, ‘I am free of you; indeed, I fear Allah, Lord of all worlds.’ So the end of both of them is that they will be in the Fire, abiding therein forever. That is the recompense of the wrongdoers.” (Qur’an 59:16–17)
He said:
There was a woman who tended sheep, and she had four brothers. At night she used to shelter near the hermitage of a monk. The monk came down, committed fornication with her, and she became pregnant. Satan then came to him and said, “Kill her and bury her, for you are a man whose word is trusted.” So he killed her and buried her.
Satan next appeared in a dream to her brothers, saying, “The monk in the hermitage violated your sister; when she conceived he killed her and buried her in such-and-such a place.”
When morning came one of them said, “By Allah, I had a dream last night, though I am unsure whether to relate it.” They replied, “Tell us.” He recounted it, and another said, “By Allah, I saw the same.” A third said, “By Allah, I too saw it.” They concluded, “By Allah, this cannot be coincidental.” They went to their ruler, lodged a complaint against the monk, and brought him down from his cell.
As they were taking him away, Satan approached and said, “I am the one who led you into this, and none can deliver you but I. Prostrate to me just once and I will save you from what I have brought upon you.” So he prostrated to him. Yet when they presented him to their king, Satan disowned him, and the monk was seized and executed.
A similar narration has come from Ibn ʿAbbās, Ṭāwūs, and Muqātil ibn Ḥayyān.
It is also transmitted from the Commander of the Believers, ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib—may Allah be pleased with him—in a different wording. Ibn Jarīr said: Kallād ibn Aslam told us, al-Naḍr ibn Shumayl related to us, from Shuʿbah, from Abū Isḥāq, who said: I heard ʿAbdullāh ibn Nahīk say: I heard ʿAlī say:
“A monk worshipped Allah for sixty years. Satan tried to overcome him but could not, so he possessed a woman who had …”
