Ibn Abī al-Dunyā also said:
Abū Khaythamah narrated to us; Hujayn ibn al-Muthannā narrated to us; ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Abī Salamah narrated to us, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Faḍl al-Hāshimī, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Aʿraj, from Abū Hurayrah, who said:
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The Trumpet will be blown, whereupon everyone in the heavens and on earth will swoon save those whom Allah wills. Then it will be blown a second time, and I shall be the first to rise. I will then see Moses holding fast to the Throne; and I do not know whether the swoon he suffered at the Mount was accounted to him, or whether he has been raised before me.”
This wording is found in the Ṣaḥīḥ with wording very close to it ⦗1⦘.
The report is also recorded in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim:
“I am the first for whom the earth will be cleft open, and I shall find Moses grasping ⦗2⦘ a post of the Throne; I do not know whether he regained consciousness before me, or whether he was recompensed for the swoon at the Mount.” ⦗3⦘
The presence of Moses in this context calls for examination. It may be that one of the transmitters unintentionally merged two separate reports, for the hesitation expressed here does not quite fit—especially the phrase, “or whether he was recompensed for the swoon at the Mount.”
Ibn Abī al-Dunyā further said:
Isḥāq ibn Ismāʿīl narrated to us; Sufyān—meaning Ibn ʿUyaynah—narrated to us, from ʿAmr—meaning Ibn Dīnār—from ʿAṭāʾ and Ibn Judʿān, from Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib, who said:
There was a dispute between Abū Bakr and a Jew. The Jew said, “By Him who chose Moses above all people,” whereupon Abū Bakr struck him on the face. The Jew then went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“O Jew, I am the first for whom the earth will be split open, and I shall find Moses clinging to the Throne. I do not know whether he preceded me, or whether he was rewarded by being spared the swoon.”
This chain is mursal in this version; yet the ḥadith is found in both Ṣaḥīḥ collections ⦗4⦘ through several lines of transmission with varying wording, and in some of them ⦗5⦘ the one who struck the Jew is described as a man from the Anṣār rather than the Truthful One (al-Ṣiddīq). Allah knows best.
One of the soundest versions states:
“When the Day of Resurrection comes the people will swoon, and I shall be the first to regain consciousness. I will then find Moses grasping one of the supports of the Throne, and I do not know whether he swooned and recovered before me, or whether he was rewarded because of the swoon at the Mount.” ⦗6⦘
As will be explained, this indicates that the swoon in question will occur on the plains of the Resurrection; it is a swoon distinct from the one mentioned in the Quran, and it appears that the cause of this swoon, according to the ḥadith, is the manifestation of the Lord—
