He said: The most terrifying of its names and the most hideous of its titles is yawm al-khulūd (the Day of Everlastingness)—and what will make you grasp what the Day of Everlastingness is? It is a day whose punishment never comes to an end, a day in which no unbeliever will ever have his torment lifted. We therefore seek refuge with Allah, and again we seek refuge with Allah from His wrath, His punishment, His tribulation, and His adverse decree, by His mercy, His generosity, His munificence, and His beneficence. There is no power and no might except with Allah, the Most High, the Almighty.
[A note stating that the Day of Resurrection is the day when the Trumpet will be blown to raise the bodies from their graves, and that this will occur on a Friday]
Several hadiths have been transmitted on this matter. Imām Mālik ibn Anas related—from Yazīd ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn al-Hād, from Muḥammad ibn Ibrāhīm, from Abū Salamah, from Abū Hurayrah—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday: on it Adam was created, on it he was sent down, on it his repentance was accepted, on it he died, and on it the Hour will be established. There is no creature except that, on Friday, from the time morning breaks until the sun rises, it listens attentively (1) out of dread of the Hour—except the jinn and humankind. Within it there is an hour during which no Muslim servant encounters it while he is praying and asking Allah for something without Allah granting it to him.”
Abū Dāwūd narrated this—this being his wording—and so did al-Tirmidhī through the narration of Mālik. Al-Nasāʾī also recorded it, through Qutaybah, from Bakr ibn Muḍar, from Ibn al-Hād, with a similar wording that is more complete (2).
Al-Ṭabarānī, in his al-Muʿjam al-Kabīr, transmitted—through Ādam ibn ʿAlī—from Ibn ʿUmar, in a marfūʿ report:
“The Hour will not be established except during the adhān.”
Al-Ṭabarānī said: that is, the adhān of Fajr on Friday.
Imām Muḥammad ibn Idrīs al-Shāfiʿī stated in his Musnad: Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad related to us; Mūsā ibn ʿUbaydah informed us; Abū al-Azhar Muʿāwiyah ibn Isḥāq ibn Ṭalḥah told me, from ʿUbayd Allah ibn ʿUmayr, that he heard Anas ibn Mālik say:
Gabriel brought a white mirror with a black spot in it to the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet asked, “What is this?” He replied, “This is Friday: you and your community have been singled out for it; the rest of the people—Jews and Christians—follow your lead concerning it. In it there is goodness for you, and within it is an hour during which no believing servant calls upon Allah for good but that he is answered. With us it is called yawm al-mazīd (the Day of Increase).”
The Prophet ﷺ then asked, “O Gabriel, what is the Day of Increase?” He said, “Your Lord has set aside in al-Firdaws a broad valley (3) filled with dunes of musk. When Friday comes Allah sends down whatever angels He wills, descends to His Throne, and around Him are placed pulpits of light on which sit the Prophets. Surrounding those pulpits are other pulpits of gold, encrusted with rubies and emeralds, upon which the martyrs take their seats,
