The ḥadith of Abū Razīn on Resurrection and the Rising of the Dead
Our shaykh, the ḥadith-master Abū al-Ḥajjāj Yūsuf ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Mizzī—may Allah envelop him in His mercy—together with a number of other teachers, read this to us while I listened. They said:
Fakhr al-Dīn ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd al-Wāḥid, Ibn al-Bukhārī, and several others informed us, saying: Ḥanbal ibn ʿAbd Allāh al-Mukabbir narrated to us; Abū al-Qāsim Hibat Allāh ibn al-Ḥuṣayn al-Shaybānī narrated to us; Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī ibn al-Mudhahhib al-Tamīmī narrated to us; Abū Bakr Aḥmad ibn Jaʿfar ibn Ḥamdān ibn Mālik al-Qaṭīʿī narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh the son of Imām Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal—may Allah have mercy on him—recorded in the Musnad of his father:
Ibrāhīm ibn Ḥamzah ibn Muḥammad ibn Ḥamzah ibn Muṣʿab ibn al-Zubayr al-Zubayrī wrote to me: “I have sent you this ḥadith after collating it; I heard it exactly as I have written to you, so relate it on my authority.” He said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn al-Mughīrah al-Ḥizāmī told me; he said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAyyāsh al-Samʿī al-Anṣārī al-Qubāʾī—of Banū ʿAmr ibn ʿAwf—told me, from Dalham ibn al-Aswad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Ḥājib ibn ʿĀmir ibn al-Muntafiq al-ʿUqaylī, from his father, from his uncle Laqīṭ ibn ʿĀmir.
Dalham said: My father al-Aswad also related it to me from ʿĀṣim ibn Laqīṭ that Laqīṭ went as a delegate to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, accompanied by a companion of his named Nahīk ibn ʿĀṣim ibn Mālik ibn al-Muntafiq.
Laqīṭ said: My companion and I set out until we reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at the close of Rajab, and we met him (1) just after he had finished the Dawn Prayer. He rose to address the people and said:
“O people, truly I have been reserving my voice for you for four days so that I might let you hear it. Now then—has any man been sent here by his people?”
They replied, “Let us know what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ says.”
He continued, “Yet perhaps he will be distracted by talk with himself, by talk with his companion, or be diverted by misguidance. Verily, I shall be asked: ‘Have I conveyed the message?’ Listen, then, that you may live! Sit down, sit down.”
So the people sat, while my companion and I remained standing until his mind and his sight were wholly directed toward us. I said, “Messenger of Allah, what knowledge of the unseen do you possess?”
By Allah, he laughed, shook his head, and realized that I was searching for something he had kept hidden. He then said:
“Your Lord—Exalted is He—has withheld the keys to five matters of the unseen; none knows them but Allah,” and he gestured with his hand.
I asked, “What are they?” He said:
“1. Knowledge of the appointed term of life: He knows when each of you will die, while you do not.
2. Knowledge of the drop of fluid: when it is in the womb He already knows it, while you do not.
3. Knowledge of what will be tomorrow—what you will eat tomorrow—you do not know it.
4. Knowledge of the day the rain will come: a man may look out (2) across two drought-stricken years and go on laughing, though He knows that others (3) are close at hand.
5. Knowledge of the Hour.”
Laqīṭ added, “I said, ‘We shall never be deprived of good from a Lord Who laughs.’ Then I asked, ‘Messenger of Allah, teach us from what you teach the people and from what you know, for we belong to a clan whom no one from Madhḥij believes as we do…’”
