was before everything, and He is the Last after everything. Between the two Blasts He will exchange the heavens and the earth. Then He will command water to descend upon the earth, out of which the bodies will be re-created within their graves and their parts reassembled in their tombs exactly as they had been during their lives in this world. Thereafter Allah will summon the souls and they will be brought—the souls of the believers blazing with light, while the others are shrouded in darkness. They will be placed inside the Trumpet, and Allah, exalted is He, will order Isrāfīl to blow the Blast of Resurrection. The souls will surge forth like swarming bees, filling the space between heaven and earth; each soul will enter the very body it once inhabited in this abode, and the souls will course through the bodies like poison in the one who has been stung. The earth will then split open above them just as it splits to bring forth its vegetation, and they will rush out of it swiftly to their Lord—
“hastening toward the Caller; the disbelievers will say, ‘This is a difficult Day.’ (8)” [Al-Qamar]—barefoot, naked and uncircumcised.
Allah the Exalted says:
“On the Day they come forth from the graves swiftly, as though rushing toward a target, (43) their eyes humbled, humiliation overwhelming them; that is the Day they had been warned of. (44) …” to the end of the surah [Al-Maʿārij].
He also says:
“Listen for the Day when the Caller will call from a place nearby, (41) the Day they will hear the Cry in truth—that is the Day of emergence. (42) …” to the end of the surah [Qāf: 41-45].
And He says:
“They will come forth from the graves as though they were scattered locusts, (7) hastening toward the Caller; the disbelievers will say, ‘This is a difficult Day.’ (8)” [Al-Qamar].
And He says:
“When the Horn is sounded, (8) that Day will be a hard Day, (9) not easy for the disbelievers. (10)” [Al-Muddaththir].
And He says:
“From it We created you, and into it We shall return you, and from it We shall bring you forth once again. (55)” [Tāhā].
And He says:
“Allah caused you to grow from the earth like a plant, (17) then He will return you to it, and will bring you forth again in resurrection. (18)” [Nūḥ].
There are many other verses that affirm resurrection and rising.
Ibn Abī al-Dunyā said:
Ḥamzah ibn al-ʿAbbās narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUthmān narrated to us; Ibn al-Mubārak narrated to us; Sufyān narrated to us, from Salamah ibn Kuhayl, from Abū al-Zaʿrāʾ, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd, who said:
“Before the Day of Resurrection Allah will send a wind containing an icy chill (1), bitter and piercingly cold. It will leave no believer upon the earth without taking him. Then the Hour will rise over the people. A herald will stand between heaven and earth with the Trumpet and will blow into it; every creature in the heavens and on earth will die. Between the two Blasts will last whatever Allah wills. Then Allah will send down water from beneath the Throne, and their bodies and flesh will sprout from that water just as the earth sprouts vegetation from soil.” Ibn Masʿūd then recited, “Such is the Resurrection. (9)” [Fāṭir].
“Once more the herald will stand between heaven and earth with the Trumpet and will blow into it; every soul will speed toward its body, enter it, and they will rise, standing before the Lord of all worlds. (2)”
And Wahb ibn Munabbih said: “They will decay in their graves, but when they hear the Cry the souls will return to the bodies …”
