and you will sprout forth just as vegetation sprouts.’ He added, ‘Nothing of the human being decays except one bone—the ʿajb al-dhanab (tailbone); from it the whole creation will be re-constituted on the Day of Resurrection.’ This ḥadith has already been cited through the transmissions of al-Bukhārī and Muslim. Al-Bukhārī, however, does not record the additional wording we have mentioned, namely the reference to the descent of the water, and so on. (1)
Abu Bakr ibn Abī al-Dunyā said in his book The Terrors of the Day of Resurrection: Abū ʿAmmār al-Ḥusayn ibn Ḥurayth al-Marwazī narrated to us; al-Faḍl ibn Mūsā narrated to us, from al-Ḥusayn ibn Wāqid, from al-Rabīʿ ibn Anas, from Abū al-ʿĀliyah, who said that Ubayy ibn Kaʿb told me:
‘Six signs will come before the Day of Resurrection. While the people are in their markets, the light of the sun will be taken away. As they stand bewildered, the mountains will collapse upon the face of the earth; they will move, shake, and intermingle. The jinn will flee to the humans and the humans to the jinn; beasts, birds, and cattle will mingle until they surge into one another—“when the wild beasts are gathered together” [Al-Takwīr: 5]. They will then set out—“and when the ten-month pregnant she-camels are neglected” [Al-Takwīr: 4]—that is, their owners will abandon them; then, “when the seas are set ablaze” [Al-Takwīr: 6]. The jinn will say to mankind, “We shall bring you news.” They will go to the sea, and behold, it is a raging fire. As they remain in that state, the earth will split with a single fissure, down to the seventh lowest earth and up to the seventh highest heaven. While they are still like that, a wind will come upon them and cause them to die. (2)
Ibn Abī al-Dunyā also said: Hārūn ibn ʿUmar al-Qurashī narrated to us; al-Walīd ibn Muslim narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Yazīd ibn Jābir narrated to us, from ʿAṭāʾ ibn Yazīd al-Saksakī, who said:
‘After Jesus son of Mary is taken up—may Allah have mercy on them—and as the Hour draws near, Allah will send a fragrant breeze that will take the soul of every believing man and woman. The worst of people will remain, copulating with one another like donkeys; upon them the Hour will be established. While they are in that condition, Allah will cast terror upon the inhabitants of the earth, so that their feet and their dwellings quake. The jinn, mankind, and the devils will rush to the shore (3) of the sea and stay there as long as Allah wills. Then the jinn and the devils will say, “Come, let us seek a way out.” They will go to the farthest western horizon (4) and find it sealed off, guarded by keepers. They will return to the people, and while they are still there, the Hour will loom over them. They will hear a herald proclaiming: “O people, ‘The command of Allah has come, so do not seek to hasten it’” [Al-Naḥl: 1]. A woman will never listen more attentively than to the child in her lap. Then the Trumpet will be blown, and everyone in the heavens and on earth will swoon, except those whom Allah wills. (5)
