In the ḥadith of the Trumpet it is related that when none remains except Allah—the One, the Unique, the Singular, the Self-Sufficient, who neither begets nor is begotten and to whom none is comparable—He will be the Last just as He was the First. He will roll up the heavens and the earth as a scroll is rolled for writing; then He will flatten them out, then take hold of them three times.
He will declare, “I am al-Jabbār (the Compeller),” three times.
Then He will call out, “To whom belongs sovereignty today?” three times, and no one will answer.
Thereupon Allah, Exalted be He, will reply to Himself, “To Allah, the One, the Subduer.”
Allah Most High says:
“They have not esteemed Allah with the esteem due to Him, while on the Day of Resurrection the whole earth will be in His grasp and the heavens will be folded up in His right hand. Glorified and exalted is He above what they associate with Him (67)” [Az-Zumar].
And He says:
“The Day We roll up the heaven like the rolling up of a scroll for writings (1); as We began the first creation, We shall bring it back—an obligation upon Us; surely We shall do it (104)” [Al-Anbiyāʾ].
And He says:
“so that he may warn of the Day of Meeting (15), the Day when they will all appear and nothing about them will be hidden from Allah: ‘To whom belongs sovereignty today?’ ‘To Allah, the One, the Subduer’ (16)” [Ghāfir].
It is recorded in the two Ṣaḥīḥs, in the narration of Abū Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Allah, Exalted be He, will grasp the earth and fold up the heaven in His right hand, then He will say: ‘I am the King, I am the Compeller. Where are the kings of the earth? Where are the tyrants? Where are the arrogant?’” (2).
Likewise, in both Ṣaḥīḥs, from Ibn ʿUmar, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Indeed, Allah shall grasp the earths on the Day of Resurrection, and the heavens will be in His right hand; then He will say: ‘I am the King.’” (3).
In the Musnad of Imām Aḥmad and in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, through ʿUbaydullāh ibn Miqsam, from Ibn ʿUmar, it is related that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ once recited this verse from the pulpit:
“They have not esteemed Allah with the esteem due to Him, while the whole earth will be in His grasp on the Day of Resurrection, and the heavens will be folded up in His right hand. Glorified and exalted is He above what they associate with Him (67)” [Az-Zumar].
While reciting, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ moved his hand like this—advancing and withdrawing it—and said:
“The Lord, Glorified be He, magnifies Himself: ‘I am al-Jabbār, I am al-Mutakabbir, I am the King, I am the Mighty, I am the Generous.’”
The pulpit shook beneath the Messenger of Allah ﷺ so violently that we feared it would collapse with him. This is the wording reported by Aḥmad (4).
The aḥādīth pertaining to this subject have been cited in our Tafsīr under the commentary on this verse, with their chains and exact wordings; that is sufficient—praise be to Allah.
