The Blast of Striking Down
At this blast every creature in the heavens and on the earth will perish—humankind, jinn, and angels alike—save only those whom Allah wills to spare. Some have said that those exempt are the bearers of the Throne together with Gabriel, Michael, Isrāfīl, and the Angel of Death; others say they are the martyrs, and still other views have been expressed.
Allah, Exalted is He, says:
“And the Trumpet will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will fall dead, except whom Allah wills. Then it will be blown again, and behold, they will be standing, looking on (68)” [Az-Zumar].
And He says:
“So when the Trumpet is sounded with a single blast (13)
and the earth and the mountains are lifted up and crushed with a single blow (14),
on that Day the Inevitable Event will take place (15),
and the sky will split apart, for on that Day it will be frail (16),
while the angels will stand on its edges, and that Day eight will bear above them the Throne of your Lord (17).
That Day you will be presented, and nothing of you will remain concealed (18)” [Al-Ḥāqqah : 13-18].
It has already been related in the ḥadith of the Trumpet that Allah Most High will command Isrāfīl, “Blow the Blast of Striking Down,” whereupon he will blow and all who are in the heavens and on the earth will swoon, except those whom Allah wills. Allah will then say to the Angel of Death—though He knows best who remains—“Who is left?” He will reply, “Only You, the Ever-Living who never dies; the bearers of Your Throne; Gabriel and Michael.” Allah will command him to seize the souls of Gabriel and Michael, then the souls of the bearers of the Throne, and finally He will order him to die. He will thus be the last of creation to die.
Ibn Abī al-Dunyā has also narrated, through the chain of Ismāʿīl ibn Rāfiʿ from Muḥammad ibn Kaʿb—on the latter’s own authority—and likewise from him, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ, that Allah the Exalted will say to the Angel of Death: “You are a creature of Mine; I created you for the task you have just witnessed. Die now, and you shall never live again.” Muḥammad ibn Kaʿb further reported, in what reached him, that Allah says: “Die a death after which you will never live,” whereupon the Angel of Death will let out a cry which, if the inhabitants of the heavens and the earth were to hear it, they would die of terror.
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Mūsā al-Madīnī remarked: “Ismāʿīl ibn Rāfiʿ has not been followed in this exact wording; most narrators did not transmit it.”
I say: Some have interpreted the phrase “Die a death after which you will never live” to mean: you will never again function as the Angel of Death, because after that Day there will be no more death. Indeed, it is authentically recorded in the Ṣaḥīḥ: “Death will be brought on the Day of Resurrection in the form of a dappled ram, and it will be slaughtered between Paradise and Hell. Then it will be proclaimed: O people of Hell, everlastingness without death! O people of Paradise, everlastingness without death! (1)”
Thus, even if the Angel of Death were resurrected thereafter, he would no longer serve as the Angel of Death—Allah knows best—but would be recreated in another form like the rest of the angels.
If, however, the wording cited above is authentically from the Prophet ﷺ, its apparent meaning is that he will never live again after his death; in that case the foregoing interpretation would be far-fetched—and Allah knows best.
