about the first of the portents of the Hour. He replied:
“A fire that will herd the people from the East to the West….”
The ḥadith in full is recorded in the Ṣaḥīḥ. (1)
Imām Aḥmad also narrated—through Ḥasan and ʿAffān, from Ḥammād ibn Salamah, from ʿAlī ibn Zayd, from Aws ibn Khālid, from Abū Hurayrah—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“On the Day of Resurrection people will be gathered in three groups: a group on foot, a group riding, and a group upon their faces.”
They asked, “O Messenger of Allah, how will they walk upon their faces?”
He answered, “The One who enabled them to walk on their feet is able to make them walk on their faces. Indeed, they will be shielding their faces from every rise and thorn.”
Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī likewise related it in his Musnad, from Ḥammād ibn Salamah, with a wording similar to this. (2)
Imām Aḥmad further said: ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated to us, Maʿmar informed us, from Qatādah, from Shahr ibn Ḥawshab, from ʿAbd-Allāh ibn ʿAmr, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
“There will be a migration after a migration; people will withdraw to the land to which Abraham migrated. Only the vilest of earth’s inhabitants will remain: their own land will spit them out, the Essence of the All-Merciful will loathe them, and the Fire will gather them together with the apes and swine. It will spend the night wherever they spend the night, pause with them when they rest at midday, and consume whoever falls behind.”
Al-Ṭabarānī transmitted this as well, through al-Muhallab ibn Abī Ṣufrah, from ʿAbd-Allāh ibn ʿAmr, with a similar wording. (3)
Al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū Bakr al-Bayhaqī said in his book al-Baʿth wa’l-Nushūr: Abū al-Qāsim ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿUbayd Allāh al-Ḥurfī in Baghdad informed us; Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Zubayr al-Qurashī narrated to us; al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī ibn ʿAffān narrated to us; Zayd ibn al-Ḥabbāb told us; al-Walīd ibn Jumayʿ al-Qurashī informed me. And Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥāfiẓ also informed us; Abū al-ʿAbbās Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad al-Maḥbūbī narrated to us; Saʿīd ibn Masʿūd narrated to us; Yazīd ibn Hārūn narrated to us; al-Walīd ibn ʿAbd-Allāh ibn Jumayʿ informed us—from Abū al-Ṭufayl ʿĀmir ibn Wāthilah, from Abū Surayḥah Ḥudhayfah ibn Asīd al-Ghifārī:
I heard Abū Dharr al-Ghifārī (may Allah be pleased with him) recite the verse, “We shall gather them on the Day of Resurrection on their faces—blind, dumb, and deaf” [al-Isrāʾ 17:97]. Abū Dharr then said: The Truthful and Trustworthy One ﷺ told me:
“People will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection in three companies: a company who will arrive well-fed, clothed, and riding; a company who will walk and hasten on foot; and a company whom the angels will drag upon their faces.”
We asked, “We understand the first two; what of those who walk and hasten on foot?”
He said, “Allah will strike the riding beasts with a blight (4) until no mount remains—so that a man….”
