It is related in the report of Ismaʿil ibn Rafiʿ on the Trumpet, cited earlier, that between the two blasts—the Blast of Dread and the Blast of Swooning—the sky will split open, its stars will scatter, and its sun and moon will be eclipsed. The more apparent view, and Allah knows best, is that all of this will occur only after the Blast of Swooning, when
“the earth will be changed to another earth, and the heavens as well, and they will come forth before Allah, the One, the Subduer (48); and you will see the sinners that Day bound together in chains (49), their garments of tar, and the Fire covering their faces.”
[Surah Ibrahim, 48–49]
The Exalted also says:
“When the heaven is split apart (1)
and has listened to its Lord and is obliged to do so (2),
and when the earth is spread out (3)
and has cast out whatever is in it and become empty (4),
and has listened to its Lord and is obliged to do so (5).”
[Surah al-Inshiqaq, 1–5]
And He says:
“So when vision is dazzled (7),
and the moon is eclipsed (8),
and the sun and the moon are brought together (9),
man will say on that Day, ‘Where is the refuge?’ (10)
No indeed! There is no shelter (11).
To your Lord that Day is the place of standing (12).
Man will be informed that Day of what he sent ahead and what he left behind (13).
Rather, man, against himself, will be a witness (14),
even though he may offer his excuses (15).”
[Surah al-Qiyamah, 7–15]
All of this will be clarified later, and it indeed takes place after the Blast of Swooning. As for the earth’s convulsion, its rending asunder because of that quake, and people’s flight to its farthest reaches, it is more fitting to place that after the Blast of Dread and before the Swooning.
Allah, Exalted be He, relates about the Believer from Pharaoh’s household that he said:
“O my people, I truly fear for you the Day of Calling (32),
the Day you will turn to flee, with no protector from Allah for you at all.”
[Surah Ghafir, 32–33]
And He says:
“O company of jinn and mankind, if you are able to pass beyond the regions of the heavens and the earth, then pass. You will not pass except with a warrant (33).
So which of your Lord’s favors will you both deny? (34)
A flame of fire and molten brass will be unleashed upon you, and you will not be able to defend yourselves (35).
So which of your Lord’s favors will you both deny? (36)”
[Surah al-Rahman, 33–36]
It has already been cited from the Musnad of Aḥmad, Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, and the four Sunan, in the narration of Abū Surayḥah Hudhayfah ibn Asid, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The Hour will not arise until you see ten signs…,” and he listed them until he said: “and the last of them is a fire that will emerge from the depths of ʿAdan and drive the people to the place of Gathering.” (1)
That fire will herd those who are alive at the end of time, in every corner of the earth, to the land of al-Shām, for it is the locale of the Gathering and the Resurrection.
The matter of this fire and its driving the people to al-Shām is firmly established in the two Ṣaḥīḥs, in the ḥadith of Wahīb, from ʿAbd-Allāh ibn Ṭāwūs, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah, who reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“People will be gathered in three ways: those who come hopeful, and those who come fearful; two will ride on a camel, three on a camel [and four on a camel], and ten on a camel, while the rest will be herded by the fire. It will halt with them wherever they rest at midday, lodge with them wherever they spend the night, rise with them wherever they rise in the morning, and escort them wherever they set out in the evening.” (2)
Aḥmad also transmitted—through ʿAffān, from Ḥammād, from Thābit, from Anas—that ʿAbd-Allāh ibn Salām asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ
