Ibrāhīm, Muḥammad ibn Shuʿayb ibn Shābūr, ʿAbdah ibn Sulaymān, and many others.
Qatādah, however, related it from him with a variant chain, saying:
“From Muḥammad ibn [Yazīd ibn Abī] Ziyād, from Muḥammad ibn Kaʿb, from a man, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet,” and at times he omits the unnamed man altogether.
Isḥāq ibn Rāhwayh also transmitted it from ʿAbdah ibn Sulaymān, from Ismāʿīl ibn Rāfiʿ, from Muḥammad ibn Yazīd ibn Abī Ziyād, from a man of the Anṣār, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ, while some narrators drop the first unnamed man.
Our teacher, the ḥāfiẓ al-Mizzī, said, “That wording is the sounder one.”
He added: “Al-Walīd ibn Muslim likewise narrated it from Ismāʿīl ibn Rāfiʿ and composed a separate treatise on it, citing corroborating reports from authentic hadiths.”
After quoting the narrative in full, the ḥāfiẓ Abū Mūsā al-Madīnī remarked: “Although certain transmitters in this isnād have been criticized, most of its contents are reported individually through reliable chains.” He then discussed its rarer expressions.
I say: We shall now examine the report section by section, and Allah’s help is sought.⦗1⦘

As for the blasts of the Trumpet, they are three: the Blast of Dread (nafkhatu al-fazʿ), the Blast of Swooning (nafkhatu al-ṣaʿq), and the Blast of Resurrection (nafkhatu al-baʿth), as has been explained at length in the comprehensive ḥadith of the Trumpet.
Muslim records in his Ṣaḥīḥ: “Abū Kurayb related to us, saying: Abū Muʿāwiyah narrated to us from al-Aʿmash, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Abū Hurayrah, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared:
‘Between the two blasts there will be forty.’
They asked, ‘Abū Hurayrah, forty days?’
He replied, ‘I refrain.⦗2⦘’
They said, ‘Forty months?’
He replied, ‘I refrain.’
They said, ‘Forty years?’
He replied, ‘I refrain.’
The Prophet added, ‘Then Allah will send down rain from the sky, and they will sprout forth as vegetation sprouts.’
He continued, ‘Nothing of the human being will remain except one bone—the ʿajb al-dhanab (the tailbone).⦗3⦘ From it mankind will be re-assembled on the Day of Resurrection.’”
Al-Bukhārī also narrated it through al-Aʿmash.⦗4⦘
The report concerning the tailbone—that it never decomposes and that creation will commence from it and be reconstructed from it on the Day of Resurrection—is firmly established in the Musnad of Aḥmad, through ʿAbd al-Razzaq, from Maʿmar, from Hammām, from Abū Hurayrah. Muslim likewise records it from Muḥammad ibn Rāfiʿ, from ʿAbd al-Razzaq. Aḥmad further relates it through Yaḥyā al-Qaṭṭān, from Muḥammad ibn ʿAjlān, [from Abū al-Zinād] from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Hurmuz al-Aʿraj, from Abū Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Every child of Adam will perish and be consumed….”
