Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

himself.

Then Allah will command Hell, and there will issue from it a neck—blazing yet pitch-dark. He will say:
“Did I not enjoin upon you, O children of Adam, that you must not worship Satan—surely he is an open enemy to you— 60
and that you should worship Me? This is a straight path. 61
Yet he has led astray from you a great multitude; did you not then use your reason? 62
This is Hell that you were promised! 63” [Ya-Sin]
—or, “about which you used to deny” (Abu ʿĀṣim was unsure).

He will also say: “Stand apart today, O you criminals! 59” [Ya-Sin]

Allah will distinguish the people; every nation will fall to its knees. He, exalted is He, says:
“You will see every nation kneeling; every nation will be summoned to its record: ‘Today you will be repaid for what you used to do.’ 28” [Al-Jāthiyah]

Allah will judge between His creatures—with the exception of the two weighty species, humankind and jinn. He will judge among the wild beasts and the cattle, even requiting the hornless animal for the wrong done it by the horned. When He has finished with them and no claim of one against another remains, He will say to them, “Become dust!” At that moment the disbeliever will cry, “Would that I were dust! 40” [Al-Nabaʾ]

Thereafter Allah, exalted is He, will judge between the servants, and the first issue to be decided will be cases of bloodshed. Every person slain in the path of Allah will appear, and Allah will order the killer to lift the victim’s head, its jugular veins streaming blood. The slain will say, “My Lord, ask him why he killed me.” Allah—though He knows best—will ask, “Why did you kill him?” He will reply, “My Lord, I killed him so that might and honor might belong to You.” Allah will say, “You have spoken the truth,” and He will make the victim’s face radiant like the light of the heavens; then the angels will escort him to Paradise.

Next all who were killed for reasons other than that will be brought. Allah will order the killer to lift the victim’s head, its jugular veins streaming blood. The slain will say, “My Lord, ask him why he killed me.” Allah—though He knows best—will say, “Why did you kill him?” He will answer, “My Lord, I killed him so that honor might be mine.” Allah will say to him, “Wretched one!” Thereafter no soul that killed another will remain without being killed in retaliation, and no wrong will remain unredressed. It rests with Allah’s Will: if He wills He punishes, and if He wills He shows mercy.

Allah will keep judging the rest of His creation until no injustice remains between any two beings save that He has restored the right of the oppressed from the oppressor—even to the extent that He will call to account the one who diluted milk with water and sold it, obliging him to separate the milk from the water. When Allah has finished with all of that,

a herald will proclaim—audible to every created being: “Let every people join their gods and whatever they used to worship besides Allah.” No one who worshipped anything other than Allah will remain without his gods being set before him. On that day an angel will be made to resemble ʿUzayr, and another angel to resemble the Messiah Jesus son of Mary; the Jews will follow the former and the Christians the latter, whereupon their deities will lead them to the Fire. Concerning this Allah, exalted is He, says:
“Had these been gods, they would not have entered it; all will abide therein forever. 99” [Al-Anbiyāʾ]

When none remain save the believers—among whom are hypocrites—Allah will come to them in whatever form He wills and will say, “O people, the others have gone; follow your gods and what you used to worship.” They will answer, “By Allah, we have no god but Allah; we worshipped none but Him.” He will depart from them—yet it is Allah who has come to them—and will leave them for as long as He wills. Then He will return and say, “O people, the others have gone; follow your gods and what you used to worship.” They will reply, “By Allah, we have no god but Allah; we worshipped none but Him.” He will turn away from them once more, and it is Allah who comes to them; He will stay away for as long as He wills.

Then He will come to them yet again and say, “O people, the others have gone; follow your gods and what you used to worship.” They will answer, “By Allah, we have no god but Allah; we worshipped none but Him.” Thereupon He will unveil His Shin, and of His Majesty there will appear to them that by which they recognize that He is their Lord. They will collapse in prostration upon their faces before Him, while every hypocrite will fall upon his back, and Allah—glorified is He—will make the loins of the hypocrites
