Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

dust, bones, and crumbling remains. In the same way, He cites the very act of originating creation as proof that He will re-create it in the Final Resurrection, as He—exalted is He—says:
“ He is the One who begins the creation, then brings it back again—and that is even easier for Him.” ⦗30:27⦘ [al-Rūm]
He also says:
“ Say, ‘Travel through the land and see how He originated the creation; then Allah will bring about the second creation. Truly, Allah is Powerful over all things.’ ⦗20⦘” [al-ʿAnkabūt]
And He says:
“ It is He who sent down water from the sky in due measure; with it We revived a dead land—thus shall you be brought forth. ⦗11⦘” [al-Zukhruf]
And He says:
“ Allah is the One who sends the winds which raise the clouds; We drive them to a lifeless land and thereby give life to the earth after its death—thus is the resurrection. ⦗9⦘” [Fāṭir]
In al-Aʿrāf He says:
“ In this way We bring forth the dead, so that you may take heed. ⦗57⦘”

Sūrah Qāf, from beginning to end, speaks of resurrection and rising again, as does Sūrah al-Wāqiʿah; indeed the entire Quran is replete with this theme, and there is no altering the words of Allah.

He, exalted, says:
“ We created them and strengthened their joints; and when We will, We can replace them with others like them. ⦗28⦘” [al-Insān]
And He says:
“ No indeed! We created them from what they know. So I swear by the Lord of the Easts and the Wests that We are surely able ⦗40⦘ to replace them with better than them, and We shall not be outstripped. ⦗41⦘” [al-Maʿārij]
He also says:
“ They say, ‘Shall we really be returned to our former state? ⦗10⦘ Even after we have become decayed bones?’ ⦗11⦘ They say, ‘That would be a ruinous return.’ ⦗12⦘ It will be but a single blast, ⦗13⦘ and behold—they will be out on the plain. ⦗14⦘” [al-Nāziʿāt]

Sūrah al-Ṣāffāt likewise contains many verses attesting to the Return, as do Sūrah al-Kahf and others.

Further, Allah—glorified be He—relates in five places within Sūrah al-Baqarah how He brought the dead back to life in this world:

  1. In the affair of the Children of Israel, when they killed one another after worshipping the calf; at the very beginning of the sūrah He says: “ Then We raised you after your death, so that you might be grateful. ⦗56⦘”
  2. In the story of the Heifer: “ So We said, ‘Strike him with part of it.’ Thus does Allah give life to the dead and show you His signs, that you may reason. ⦗73⦘”—for He revived the slain man when they struck him with a piece of the cow.
  3. In the story of “ those who left their homes in their thousands for fear of death. Allah said to them, ‘Die,’ then He revived them again.” ⦗2:243⦘
  4. In the story of the man “ who passed by a town lying in ruins upon its roofs. He said, ‘How will Allah give life to this after its death?’ So Allah caused him to die for a hundred years, then brought him back to life,” and He likewise revived his donkey—the story is well known—“ When it became clear to him he said, ‘I know that Allah is Powerful over all things.’ ⦗259⦘”
  5. The account of Abraham, peace be upon him, and the birds: “ When Abraham said, ‘My Lord, show me how You give life to the dead.’ He said, ‘Do you not believe?’ He said, ‘Yes indeed, but so that my heart may be reassured.’ He said, ‘Then take four birds and draw them close to you; place a part of them on every hill, then call them—they will come to you swiftly. And know that Allah is Mighty, Wise.’ ⦗260⦘”

Allah has also told the story of the Companions of the Cave, how He kept them asleep for three hundred solar years—equivalent to three hundred and nine lunar years—and said of them: “ Thus We disclosed them so that they might know that Allah’s promise is true and that the Hour is beyond all doubt.” ⦗18:21⦘
