recognising one another. Lost indeed are those who denied the meeting with Allah; they were never rightly guided. ⦗45⦘ [Yūnus 10:45]
Allah, exalted is He, also says,
“On the Day they behold it, it will seem to them that they had not stayed except for an evening or its forenoon.” ⦗46⦘ [al-Nāziʿāt 79:46]
And He says,
“It is Allah who has sent down the Book in truth, and the Balance; and what will make you realise?—perhaps the Hour is near. Those who do not believe in it seek to hasten it, whereas those who believe are fearful of it and know that it is the truth. Verily, those who dispute about the Hour are indeed in far-reaching error.” ⦗17-18⦘ [al-Shūrā 42:17-18]
He, exalted be He, says,
“On the Day the Trumpet is blown We shall gather the guilty on that Day, their eyes bluish with terror, whispering among themselves, ‘You stayed only ten (days).’ We know best what they will say, when the most reasonable of them will declare, ‘You stayed only a single day.’” ⦗102-104⦘ [Ṭā Hā 20:102-104]
And He says,
“He will say, ‘How many years did you remain on earth?’ They will reply, ‘We remained a day, or part of a day; ask those who keep count.’ He will say, ‘You stayed only a little—if only you had known.’” ⦗112-114⦘ [al-Muʾminūn 23:112-114]
He, the Exalted, says,
“They ask you about the Hour: ‘When will it take place?’ Say, ‘Knowledge of it rests only with my Lord; none can disclose its time but He. It weighs heavily on the heavens and the earth; it will not come upon you except suddenly.’ They ask you as though you were well informed about it. Say, ‘Knowledge of it rests only with Allah, but most people do not know.’” ⦗187⦘ [al-Aʿrāf 7:187]
And He says,
“They ask you about the Hour: ‘When will it be set?’ What concern of yours is it to mention it? To your Lord alone belongs its final knowledge.” ⦗42-44⦘ [al-Nāziʿāt 79:42-44]
He says,
“Indeed, the Hour is coming—I almost keep it hidden—so that every soul may be recompensed for what it strives for. So let none who disbelieves in it and follows his own desires turn you away from it, lest you perish.” ⦗15-16⦘ [Ṭā Hā 20:15-16]
And He says,
“Say: No one in the heavens or on the earth knows the unseen except Allah, nor do they perceive when they will be resurrected. No, their knowledge fails concerning the Hereafter; indeed, they are in doubt about it—indeed, they are blind to it.” ⦗65-66⦘ [al-Naml 27:65-66]
And He, exalted is He, says,
“Indeed, with Allah alone is knowledge of the Hour; He sends down the rain and knows what is in the wombs; and no soul knows what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul knows in what land it will die. Surely Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware.” ⦗34⦘ [Luqmān 31:34]
For this reason, when Jibril (peace be upon him) asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the Hour, he said to him: “The one who is questioned about it knows no more than the questioner.” That is, the knowledge of every person who might be asked, and of every questioner, is equally deficient in this matter—how much more so for everyone besides them. If the definite article in “the one asked” and “the questioner” alludes specifically to the Prophet and to Jibril, then all others are, a fortiori, ignorant of it; and if it is generic, the wording itself makes the point—and Allah knows best. The Prophet ﷺ then mentioned some of the portents of the Hour and concluded: “They are among five matters that none knows except Allah,” after which he recited, “Indeed, with Allah alone is knowledge of the Hour…” ⦗34⦘ [Luqmān 31:34]. Allah, exalted be He, also says,
“They inquire of you, ‘Is it really true?’ Say, ‘Yes, by my Lord, it is most certainly true, and you can never escape.’” ⦗53⦘ [Yūnus 10:53]
And He says,
“The disbelievers say, ‘The Hour will never come upon us.’ Say, ‘Yes—by my Lord, it will surely come upon you—the Knower of the unseen; not even an atom’s weight escapes Him in the heavens or on the earth, nor anything smaller than that nor greater, but it is in a clear Record—so that He may recompense those who believe and do righteous deeds; such people will have forgiveness and a noble provision. But those who strive to thwart Our signs, seeking thereby to frustrate Us, they will have a punishment of painful torment.’” ⦗3-5⦘ [Sabaʾ 34:3-5]
And He, the Exalted, says,
“The disbelievers claim that they will not be resurrected. Say, ‘Yes—by my Lord, you will surely be resurrected; then you will surely be informed of what you did. That is easy for Allah.’” ⦗7⦘ [al-Taghābun 64:7]
These, then, are three verses in which Allah, exalted be He, commanded His Messenger to swear by Him to affirm the coming of the Resurrection and the re-creation of mankind.
