and you were each granted two qirāṭs apiece. The people of the Torah and the Gospel thereupon said, “Our Lord! These have done less work yet have received greater reward!” He said, “Have I withheld from you anything of the recompense that is due to you?” They answered, “No.” He said, “That is My grace; I confer it upon whom I will.” Thus al-Bukhārī also reported it through Abū al-Yamān (1).
Al-Bukhārī further narrates—through Sufyān al-Thawrī, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Dīnār, from Ibn ʿUmar—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The span allotted to you, in relation to the lifespans of the nations before you, is like the interval between the ʿAṣr prayer and sunset; your example and the example of the Jews and the Christians…” He then cited the ḥadith in full and at greater length (2).

Imām Aḥmad said: “Al-Faḍl ibn Dukayn narrated to us; Sharīk narrated to us; I heard Salamah ibn Kuhayl relate from Mujāhid, from Ibn ʿUmar, who said: We were sitting with the Prophet ﷺ while the sun was on Quʿayqiʿān (3) after the ʿAṣr prayer, and he said: ‘Your lifespans, compared with those who have already passed, are only like what remains of the day compared with what has elapsed of it.’” Aḥmad alone transmitted this. The chain is sound and unobjectionable (4).

A man beside him said, ‘O Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, you have stood with me many times, yet you never acted like this!’ He replied, ‘I recalled the Messenger of Allah ﷺ standing where I now stand, saying: “O people, nothing remains of your world compared with what has passed except what remains of this day of yours compared with what has elapsed of it.”’” Aḥmad alone reported this (5).

Imām Aḥmad said: “Yūnus narrated to us; Ḥammād—meaning Ibn Zayd (6)—narrated to us, from Ayyūb, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Lo, the likeness of your appointed terms, in relation to the terms of the nations before you, is like the interval between the prayer of…’”
