Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

Imam Aḥmad also said: ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated to us; Maʿmar narrated to us, from al-Zuhrī, who informed me that Anas ibn Mālik said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out when the sun had passed its zenith and led the ẓuhr prayer. When he had given the salutation he stood upon the pulpit, spoke about the Hour, and mentioned that before it there would occur momentous events… and he went on to relate the remainder of the report. (1)

Imam Aḥmad said: Hāshim and Abū Kāmil narrated to us; they said: Zuhayr narrated to us; Suhayl ibn Abī Ṣāliḥ narrated to us, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The Hour will not come until time contracts: a year will seem like a month, a month like a week, a week like a day, a day like an hour, and an hour like the burning of a palm-leaf stalk.” (Suhayl explained that a saʿfah is a strip of palm-leaf.) This chain satisfies the conditions of Muslim. (2)

Imam Aḥmad said: Muḥammad ibn ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Kāmil narrated to us, from Abū Ṣāliḥ, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “The world will not end until it passes into the hands of lukāʿ ibn lukāʿ (the most worthless of men).” Its chain is sound and strong. (3)

Imam Aḥmad said: Yūnus and Surayj narrated to us; they said: Fulayḥ narrated to us, from Saʿīd ibn ʿUbayd ibn al-Sabbāq, from Abū Hurayrah, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Before the Hour there will be years of deception: in them the truthful will be called a liar and the liar believed, the trustworthy will be deemed treacherous and the treacherous trusted, and the ruwaybiḍah will speak.” Surayj added, “And people will defer to the ruwaybiḍah.” (4) This chain is good, and they did not record it through this route. (5)

Imam Aḥmad said: Hawdhah narrated to us; ʿAwf narrated to us, from Shahr ibn Ḥawshab, from Abū Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Among the signs of the Hour is that the shepherds of sheep will be seen as the leaders of the people, that the barefoot, naked and hungry will compete in building tall structures, and that the slave-girl will give birth to her mistress—or to her master.” This chain is fair, and they did not transmit it through this route. (6)

Imam Aḥmad said: ʿAmmār ibn Muḥammad narrated to us, from al-Ṣalt ibn Quwayd, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “The Hour will not be established until the horned animal no longer gores the hornless one.” Aḥmad alone reported this, and there is no fault in its chain. (7)

(1) Narrated by Ahmad in his Musnad (3/162) and by Mu‘ammar in his Jami‘ appended to the Musannaf of ‘Abd al-Razzaq, no. 20796; it is also transmitted via this chain by al-Bukhari (7294) and Muslim (2359), although they did not record its exact wording. (2) Narrated by Ahmad in his Musnad (2/537–538). (3) Narrated by Ahmad in his Musnad (2/358). In its isnad appears Abu Salih, the freedman (mawla) of Diba’ah, who is unknown; however, it is corroborated by the hadith of Hudhayfah narrated by Ahmad (5/389) and recorded by al-Tirmidhi (2209), making it a sound (hasan) hadith. (4) This is the wording found in Jami‘ al-Masanid, which is correct; in the original and the printed edition of the Musnad it reads “ar-Ruwaybidha.” (5) Narrated by Ahmad in his Musnad (2/338), by Ibn Mājah (4036) through a different chain from Abū Hurayrah, and by al-Hakim (4/465) with the addition: “They asked, ‘What is ar-Ruwaybidha?’ He replied, ‘A frivolous man who speaks on public affairs.’” It is a sound (hasan) hadith. (6) Narrated by Ahmad (2/394). Its isnad includes Shahr, who is weak; nevertheless, there are supporting chains, so it is a sound (hasan) hadith. (7) Narrated by Ahmad in his Musnad (2/442). It includes al-Salt, who is unknown; al-Nasa’i commented on this hadith: “It is a rejected (munkar) hadith.”
