Sufyan al-Thawri narrated—from Suhayl, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The days and nights will not pass away until the land of the Arabs returns to meadows and rivers, or until the Euphrates uncovers a mountain of gold. People will then fight over it, and out of every hundred, ninety-nine will be killed while only one will escape.” Muslim has also recorded it through another chain from Suhayl.⦗2⦘
Al-Bukhari transmitted—from Abu al-Yaman, from Shuʿayb—and Muslim, by way of Maʿmar, both of them from al-Zuhri, from Saʿid, from Abu Hurayrah—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The Hour will not be established until the buttocks of the women of Daws sway in circumambulation around Dhu al-Khalasah, the idol of Daws which they used to worship in the pre-Islamic age of ignorance.”⦗3⦘
In Sahih Muslim it is reported—through al-Aswad ibn al-ʿAlaʾ, from Abu Salamah, from ʿAʾishah—who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say,
“Night and day will not cease until al-Lat and al-ʿUzza are worshipped again.”
I said, “O Messenger of Allah, I thought that when Allah revealed,
‘He it is who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth that He may cause it to prevail over every religion, even though the idolaters detest it’ (al-Tawbah 9:33),
this promise had already been fulfilled.”
He replied, “Something of that will indeed take place as Allah wills. Then Allah will send a pleasant breeze that will take the soul of everyone who has even a mustard-seed’s weight of faith in his heart, and only those in whom there is no good at all will remain; they will return to the religion of their forefathers.”⦗4⦘
In the collection entitled Juzʾ al-Ansari it is related—through Humayd, from Anas—that ʿAbd Allah ibn Salam asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, “What is the first of the portents of the Hour?” He replied, “A fire that will gather the people from the east to the west…,” and he narrated the hadith in full. Al-Bukhari also related it from Humayd, from Anas.⦗5⦘
Abu Zurʿah likewise narrated—from Abu Hurayrah—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was one day sitting in an open place with the people when a Bedouin came and asked him about faith… until he said, “O Messenger of Allah, when is the Hour?”
He answered, “The one who is questioned about it knows no more than the one who asks. Yet I will tell you about its portents: when the slave-girl gives birth to her mistress, that is one of its portents; when the barefoot, naked become the leaders of the people, that too is one of its portents—among five matters known only to Allah.”
He then recited:
“Indeed, with Allah alone rests knowledge of the Hour; He sends down the rain, and He knows what is in the wombs. No soul knows what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul knows in what land it will die. Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware.” (Luqman 31:34)
Then the man went away, and the Prophet said, “Bring him back to me.”
