from ʿUmārah ibn al-Qaʿqāʿ ibn Shubrumah, from Abū Zurʿah ibn ʿAmr ibn Jarīr, from Abū Hurayrah, in a marfūʿ report with the same wording. (1)
Al-Bukhārī then said: “Ishāq narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Razzāq narrated to us; Maʿmar narrated to us, from Hammām ibn Munabbih, from Abū Hurayrah, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘The Hour will not be established until the sun rises from the west. When it rises and the people see it, they will all believe, yet at that time no soul will profit from its faith.’ He then recited this verse.” Muslim likewise transmitted it from Muḥammad ibn Rāfiʿ, from ʿAbd al-Razzāq ibn Hammām al-Ṣanʿānī with the same chain, and Muslim alone recorded it through al-ʿAlāʾ ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Yaʿqūb, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah. (2)
Imām Aḥmad said: “Wakīʿ narrated to us; Fudayl ibn Ghazwān narrated to us, from Abū Ḥāzim Salmān, from Abū Hurayrah, who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: ‘When three signs appear, no soul will benefit from its faith if it had not believed before or earned any good through its faith: the sun’s rising from the west, the Smoke, and the Beast of the earth.’” Muslim transmitted it from Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah and Zuhayr ibn Ḥarb, both from Wakīʿ; Muslim, al-Tirmidhī, and Ibn Jarīr also recorded it through other routes from Fudayl ibn Ghazwān with similar wording. (3)
This ḥadīth has reached us through numerous chains from Abū Hurayrah and from several other Companions as well. Among them is the narration of Abū Sarīḥah Ḥudhayfah ibn Asīd, who related that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “The Hour will not come until you see ten signs: the sun’s rising from the west …” and he mentioned the remainder of the report. It was recorded by Aḥmad, Muslim, and the authors of the Sunan collections, as noted more than once. (4)
Muslim also narrates—through al-ʿAlāʾ, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah, and through Qatādah, from al-Ḥasan, from Ziyād ibn Rabāḥ, from Abū Hurayrah—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Hasten to perform righteous deeds before six things …,” among which he listed the sun’s rising from the west, as mentioned earlier. (5)
Both Ṣaḥīḥs further contain the narration of Ibrāhīm ibn Yazīd ibn Sharīk, from his father, from Abū Dharr, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked me, “Do you know where this sun goes when it sets?” I replied, “I do not know.” He said, “It travels until it prostrates beneath the Throne, then it seeks permission, and it will soon be told: ‘Return by the way you came.’”
