Marzūq, on the authority of ʿAṭiyyah, who said: ʿAbd Allah stated, “The Beast will burst forth from a fissure in al-Ṣafā, racing like a horse; for three days even a third of its body will still not have emerged.

ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr said: “The Beast will come out from beneath a rock in the mountain pass of Ajyād. It will then face the east and give a cry that pierces it, then face Syria and give a cry that pierces it, then face the west and give a cry that pierces it, then face Yemen and give a cry that pierces it. After that it will set out from Mecca in the evening and reach ʿUsfān by morning.” He was asked, “And after that?” He replied, “After that I do not know.”

He also said: “The Beast will emerge on the night of Jamʿ.” (1)

Wahb ibn Munabbih narrated that ʿUzayr the Prophet said: “The Beast will come out from beneath Sodom—the city of the people of Lot.”

These reports conflict with one another, and Allah knows best.

Abū al-Ṭufayl said: “The Beast will emerge from al-Ṣafā or al-Marwah.” Al-Bayhaqī related this, and he then cited the report transmitted by Yaḥyā ibn Maʿīn:

“Hishām ibn Yūsuf told us; Rabāḥ ibn ʿUbayd Allah ibn ʿUmar told us; from Suhayl, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared, ‘What an evil ravine is the Ravine of Jiyād! What an evil ravine is the Ravine of Jiyād!’—twice or thrice. They asked, ‘Why is that, O Messenger of Allah?’ He replied, ‘Because from it the Beast will emerge and cry out three times, and everyone between the two horizons will hear it.’”

He also transmitted—through Farqad ibn al-Ḥajjāj:

“I heard ʿUqbah ibn Abī al-Ḥasnāʾ; I heard Abū Hurayrah say that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘The Beast of the earth will come out from Jiyād; its chest will reach the Corner while its tail has not yet emerged.’ He added, ‘It is a beast covered in hair and standing on legs.’”

Imām Aḥmad likewise narrated—through Yazīd ibn Hārūn, Bahz ibn Asad, and ʿAffān ibn Muslim; from Ḥammād ibn Salamah; from ʿAlī ibn Zayd ibn Judʿān; from Aws ibn Khālid—on the authority of Abū Hurayrah, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“The Beast of the earth will emerge carrying the staff of Moses and the ring of Solomon. With the ring it will stamp the unbeliever on the nose, and with the staff it will brighten the believer’s face, so that when people gather around a single table, one will say, ‘O believer,’ and another will say, ‘O disbeliever.’”

Ibn Mājah also recorded it through Abū Bakr ibn Abī Shaybah; from Yūnus ibn Muḥammad al-Muʾaddib; from Ḥammād ibn Salamah, with the same wording. Abū Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī likewise narrated it from Ḥammād ibn Salamah, but in his version it states:

“With the staff it will stamp the unbeliever on the nose, and with the ring it will brighten the believer’s face.”

This latter wording is more fitting, and Allah knows best. (2)
