Al-Bidayah wa an-NihayahIbn Kathir

Abu Dāwūd al-Ṭayālisī transmitted this report through both Ṭalḥah ibn ʿAmr and Jarīr ibn Ḥāzim. As for Ṭalḥah, he said: ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUbayd ibn ʿUmayr informed me that Abū al-Ṭufayl related it to him from Hudhayfah ibn Asīd al-Ghifārī—Abū Sarīḥah. Jarīr, on the other hand, said: on the authority of ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUbayd, from a man of the family of ʿAbd Allāh ibn Masʿūd. The version of Ṭalḥah is fuller and superior.

He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned the Beast and declared:

“It will have three appearances in the course of time. It will first appear in the remotest part of the desert, and the town”—that is, Mecca—“will hear nothing of it. Then it will lie low for a long while. After that it will come out a second time, nearer than the first; the desert dwellers will spread word of it and news of it will reach the town”—again, meaning Mecca.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ continued:

“Then, while people are assembled in the most sacred and most honored of mosques before Allah—the Sacred Mosque—they will suddenly hear it lowing between the Corner and the Station, shaking the dust from its head. People will scatter from it, some singly and some in groups, while a band of believers will stand firm, knowing that they cannot elude Allah. It will begin with them, polishing their faces until they shine like resplendent stars. Thereafter it will roam the earth: no pursuer will catch it and no fugitive will escape it, to the extent that a man will seek refuge from it in prayer, and it will come up behind him and say, ‘So-and-so, is it only now that you are praying?’ He will then turn toward it, whereupon it will brand his face and leave. People will thereafter share wealth and travel together throughout the cities, and the believer will be distinguishable from the disbeliever, so much so that a believer will say, ‘O disbeliever, settle my claim,’ and a disbeliever will say, ‘O believer, settle my claim.’”

Thus it is related as a marfūʿ report through this chain and wording, which is unusual. Ibn Jarīr also narrated it along two paths from Hudhayfah ibn Asīd as a mawqūf report, and he transmitted it marfūʿ from Hudhayfah ibn al-Yamān, stating that this will occur in the time of Jesus son of Mary while he is circumambulating the House, but there is a weakness in that chain, and Allah knows best. ⦗1⦘

Ibn Mājah recorded: Abū Ghassān Muḥammad ibn ʿAmr narrated to us; Abū Tumaylah narrated to us; Khālid ibn ʿUbayd narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Buraydah narrated to us, from his father, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took me to a spot in the desert near Mecca. The ground there was hard, surrounded by sand. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“The Beast will emerge from this place. If only an opening the width of a handspan should appear …”

Ibn Buraydah added: I performed ḥajj several years later, and he showed us his staff; it was of such-and-such a length—meaning that the opening will continue to widen until the time of its emergence. Allah knows best. ⦗2⦘

ʿAbd al-Razzāq said, on the authority of Maʿmar, from Qatādah, that Ibn ʿAbbās said: “It is a hairy beast with four legs, and it will come forth from one of the valleys of Tihāmah.” Saʿīd ibn Manṣūr likewise related it through ʿUthmān ibn Maṭar, from Qatādah, from Ibn ʿAbbās in similar terms.

Ibn Abī Ḥātim said: My father narrated to me; ʿAbd Allāh ibn Rajāʾ narrated to us; Fuḍayl ibn
